ear problem

I just got home from work and was playing with the dogs when I noticed the whole inside of Voodoo's left ear is like blood red. Its not bleeding. He keeps shaking his head and rubbing on the furniture. I cant imagine it's an ear infection since he has been on antibiotics for about 10 days. He's been on Antirobe. The vet found a couple of flea bites, even though he has been on frontline and he had a small flare up of Demodex...again. Any Ideas? Where are you Sonja?! I need you!

My Shih-tzu has a similar problem. Hers is a yeast infection, symptoms being very foul smelling ears with the inside being deep red. My vet says this is common in floppy eared dogs since the ears retain more moisture. We have to clean her ears out once a week with a saline type solution and then apply a greasy lotion to keep the infection away. Before the vet diagnosed her condition she would do the exact same thing, constantly shaking her head and scratching her ear. Its not much trouble keeping on top of it, but it returns quickly if we forget to clean it.

I'm not a vet and I dont know exactly what it could be, a vet would be better able to tell you what it is.

I clean his ears a couple times a week. He never has much build up in his ears except when he had ear mites. I just very carefully cleaned them out with a baby wipe like I usually do. They were full of brownish gook. It really seems to bother him. The whole ear is bright red. Like I said, he took his last antibiotic today, so I cant imagine its an infection. He hasnt been in any water lately.I gave him a Benedryl and I'm debating if I should try to call the vet tonight.

That antirobe may not do the trick for an ear infection, totally different type of antibiotic but it's usually good for skin type infections. That brown stuff needs something different...its usually ear mites.

Make sure there isn't anything lodged in the ear and if its clear then give Pat a call so he can get him started on some meds for it.
