Unaltered and unbothered

A few months back, my boyfriend adopted a stray golden retriever who had been roaming his neighborhood. When they went to the vet, my bf was told to hold off on neutering Ranger, as the vet wanted to address a skin allergy first.

Um, my question, and one which we couldn't find anywhere on the net, is - should my boyfriend be concerned with Ranger's 99% lack of sexual behavior? My knowledge is more focused on horses and cats, and I know that both geldings and altered toms can display mating behavior around females in heat, or in the case of my gelding, just around mares in general. All the stallions and toms I've worked with have had agressive, territorial, etc behaviors of one sort or another. The closest Ranger comes to that is going behind someone, placing his muzzle between the person's legs, and then just standing there. No sniffing, no licking, no mounting - just volunteer collapsible stool duty.

Ranger has a follow-up with the vet soon, and we're wondering, is this something we should bring up?

Have you had him around a female dog? Esp one in heat... If there is no reaction (and if he is still not fixed I would not bring him w/in a 100 feet of a female in heat) then I might be concerned.

I wouldn't have any concerns. A dog's sexual behavior includes smelling other females, especially their urine. Other than that, unless a female is in heat, they don't have anything else to do.

Humping, either other dogs, or people's legs, is not a sexual thing, unless again, it is a female in heat. This behavior is more related to hierarchy and dominance than it is to actual mating. If you look at a wolf pack, there are only two sexually active animals in the entire group, the alpha female and alpha male, all the other dogs just ignore that part of life, as do most dogs living with us people.

I'm glad your bf was able to give him a good home. Do you know where he came from, or who had him previously? How old is he?

Novel - Forgot to mention that, thanks. My grandparents old cocker would hump EVERYONES leg, and it was a female.

I agree with Novel, you shouldn't be concerned at all with his "lack of interest" and since he isn't neutered at the moment I'm happy for you that he isn't interested.
