can we have more information?
Is it an alergy or maybe a reaction to food?
Fleas?

Hi Jacklover

I agree with Linnie, there may be an allergy causing the itching and dry skin. Will you tell us what kind of food he eats, what his environment is like? We would very much like to help and the more information you can give us the more we can guide or suggest possible solutions.

Yup sorry everyone was in a bit of a rush when I posted it my friends dog was in labour and didnt want to miss it, ok here is some info

Jessika has always had itchy skin (typical Jack), she has been to the vets about but they dont seem to know what it is, she has had it off and on since I have had her but this time its worse! I think it may be a grass allergy as its worse in the summer, she itches her eyes, the eye without the white patch seems to be the itchyest, she itches eyes, back of front legs, lips, ears and arm pits, the eyes seem to be the most irriting thing for her. I have used a tea tree skin spray and it really helps on the armpits, but the face area is hard to find something safe to use. She is on a allergin free diet, she also gets one to two small sardines a day and Today has started having a special oil for itchy skin in her feed, the hot spots seem to be the eye area only. her skin isnt dry and I'm running out of idea's. It has been hot here but for the last few weeks its been raining and she is no different weather its raining or sunny.

Now the thing is she is pregnant so its even herder finding something sutiable. Hope thats enough info, hope you can help please

One thing that I think I might try is cutting out the sardines, some dogs do have a slight allergy to the fish itself ( usually effecting the eye area most ) but still do very well on fish oil caps.

You might try using a strong green tea solution cooled to room temperature and swab the areas that are affected and around the eyes. You'll want to do this several times a day. It won't cure what is causing the itchiness but may soothe the areas so she is more comfortable.

Poor little girl! If she is prego that might be why her allergies are worse this time...her little hormones are all wonky.

I don't know what to do for her eye, other than the suggestions above, but have you tried soaking her in something like Aveeno? That has oatmeal in it and seriously soothes irritated, albeit human, skin. Of course, soaking her in anything for any period of time is probably easier said than done.

Just a thought...

Coupke questions for you since you mentioned she has always had trouble.

1. Has a bacterial culture ever been done?

2. When she has this problem occur do the areas usually measure about 1/2 inch - 2 inches in diameter?

3. Has your vet ever tried a combo of steroids and antihistamines to see if she improves with it?

4. Ever considered having her allergy tested?

To stop the itching around the eye while keeping her safe from ingesting something that might harm her you can always mix equal parts of extra virgin olive oil and oil of thyme. Dab it on with a cotton ball being careful not to get it in the eye. By using the cotton you can just lightly cover it. This will stop it at least from itching so she doesn't dig at it any longer.

she has never had any tests done because it has never been like this, it has only ever been minor itching and was soothed with tea tree, so I havent had the need to take her in, the itching can be anysize from 1/2" to 5" , We went to the vets yesterday and if she is still itching by fri she will have to go on antihistime tabs, the vets said she thinks its a seasonal allergy and its acclerated through pregnancy

My two JR's also have a itchy skin. We have tried everything and the only thing that is working for them is rubbing the itchy spots with a aloe vera gel. It really relieves the itching immediately.

I can't see her in person of course but besides the areas that have been dug at it almost resembles a staph. The bacterial culture might be worth doing.

It could very easily just be allergies that have been put into hyper drive due to pregnancy though.

Can you tell me more about staph? The vet said she doesnt want to do too much at the mo because she gets so stressed out at the vets, she would like to do some tests when she has had them.
