His got Poo-ing problems... HEEELLLP
Hey guys,
I have a Shitzu/Maltese and his having some problems poo-ing. He seems to be constipated (can't poo) .. His in that position when dogs poo, but his been like that for quite a while now. He keeps screaming in pain and looks to be dehydrating .. (his had water in his bowl all along though ..) I just lifted up his tail and it seems like the poo is stuck right up his *** bum. His got quite a lot of hair down there since he hasn't been trimmed (we went on a 4 week holiday) so i keep thinking it's stopping him from pooing more. But im still not sure .. Also, lately the our family member said his been feeding him quite a lot of bones.. could it be bones stuck inside? Please help, much appreciated. Thanx P.S - i'm taking him to the VET tomorrow morning .. along with some grooming.. |

He sure needs to go to the vet.
Have you tried also soaking him in a warm bath to unclag his rear end if he has poo stuck to it? Bones can become impacted In cases of ordinary constipation my vet suggests the use of metamucal. Please keep us posted as to your dogs progress after you see the vet |

If he's dehydrated and screaming in pain, I'd find a 24hr or emergency vet and get him there straight away (or at least find one you can phone and ask for advice). After all, how would you like to be in agony all night long? Plus, dehydration is a serious issue.
About the bones...if they're cooked, you may have problems and your family member should be told off for feeding such a dangerous food stuff to a dog. If they were raw, I don't think that would be the problem. By the way, welcome to the site. I hope you'll keep us updated, and I'm wishing you and your dog the best...I hope he's alright. It's so awful to see our pets in pain and distress. Cass. EDIT: Just had a sudden thought. Check his rear end again and make sure that the poo isn't just matted at his butt. Having owned nothing but long haired dogs myself, I know it can get messy down there if you don't keep an eye on it. The 'matting' can pull on the fur so much that it's incredibly painful. You might want to cut all the hair around his bum if you can't see well enough. |

Hey guys, thanks for the help.
I just took him to a local vet for 24hr emergency service .. he was very weak and had little movement, although his big eyes kept looking at me.. The veterinarian inspected his rectum and said it could be related to all sorts of problems causing this to happen, but she confidently explained it could be because of the deep fried chicken bones that were fed to him. She also said that the lump of poo that was stuck on his bum was indeed caused by a knot of hair, therefore we assume why he was uncomfortable and in pain.. She cut off the knotted hair, and his rectum was swollon, probably from what i saw, 4 times bigger than usual, and very red. She gave him 3 needles, 1 anti-biotic, 1 anti-flammatory and another which i happen to have forgotten Anyways, best bet was to leave him there overnight, as he is currently on the drip, because of the amount of saliva that dribbled out of his mouth due to stress .. but his going to be okay i was told. If it's any worse then it'll probably an X-Ray.. but god forbid that So through my visit, i did learn a couple of new things, since i'm new to dogs... - Don't feed dogs human food, esp chocolates, onions, cooked/fried CHICKEN BONES/FOOD - Always keep him groomed, esp down the bottom area - Feed him recommended dog food, mostly dehydrated type, not off the shelf 'My Dog", which in Australia is available @ local supermarkets.. Whole visit including the overnight stay, medicine + anti-biotics set me back $220.AUD .. But yeah his priceless! Sorry for the long post . ![]() |

You know, everyone learns somehow, and your willingness to learn and to do what's needed for your dog says a lot about you. Of course things would have been better if the whole issue didn't exist, but you are taking action on behalf of your dog and that's great. You wouldn't believe how many people aren't willing to do what you're doing.
For everyone's sake, I really hope it gets better now that he's had some treatment. |

I'm glad you were able to get him to a vet too. And I'm extremely happy he's going to be alright.
I agree with Kade, your willingness to learn really shows what kind of a person you are. Hmm..not sure about the whole 'My Dog' thing though. I feed that to my chihuahua. The ingredients seem ok..no corn or grains, just real meat (no by-product that I've noticed) and (occasionally) vege & rice. What did the vet recommend you feed your dog? Cass. |

Yeah his priceless .. he is my best friend after all ..
![]() Anyways! UPDATE.. Just went to the VET and to my relief, HIS HOME! His doing very good but his rather heavily sedated atm.. from the pain killer. The veteninarian also said his tired from all the stress and trauma he went through, she also gave me a bottle of this medicine which I have to feed to Odi every morning & night til finished. The St George Animal Hospital vetininarian (her name is Yan) and the staff there were excellent too ![]() Though i did found it a bit funny, yet cute, that even animals, have hospitals, overnight drips etc .. lol animal kingdom! So for the next week or so, it's recovery, and Yan recommended feeding him boiled chicken breast and plain white rice. And about the MyDog food, Yan said it's not that bad, although she would recommend not to feed it to your dog on a daily basis; it's more like a treat. She also said "eukanuba" brand is best for dogs, it's more of a premium diet, but it is costly. $30 for 1.5KG Bag ..(for odi's breed) Anyways, what a night/day it's been .. now that i have experienced this horror, i'm much more careful now. Thanks for every1 @ GlobalPaw though, without support then I wouldn't have a clue Thanks heaps .. P.S. - His sleeping on the couch at the moment, surrounded by cushions, blankets and the cuteness is priceless yet again! |

Actually I think you'll find that Eukanuba is one of the worst dog foods you can get. Vets aren't nutritionists and are generally prompted by the dog food companies to promote certain brands of dog food (who ever pays most, I would guess).

Not sure what kinds of food are available in Australia...have you seen the top dog foods list??
BEST FOODS I'm glad your baby is ok. I hope he feels better! I'd say try a better food. The ironic thing about foods that are "more expensive" is that they really aren't!! The best foods are very concentrated...so you'll feed less food...which means less poop! And it's healthier for your doggy so that you wont have to visit the vet again for such problems. Good luck in whatever you decide! And hug your baby for me! |
