NO Tablets
Hi SWC,
I use the dose of 1 tsp (5ml) per 20# every 6-8 hours. But, DO NOT USE whole tablets. They MUST be chewed (as stated on the packaging). The tablets can become like foreign bodies in the stomach and GI tract from not being dissolved. I had a case a few years ago of a pet that was vomiting. We Xray'd this small dog and saw what looked like money in the stomach. It looked just like two quarters in the stomach laying on top of each other. I sent it to a colleague for endoscopic removal and it ended up being the two Pepto tablets that she gave 2 weeks prior. Since that time, I have heard about similar cases in children, thus the warning on the packaging. So, if you only have tablets, I would either go get liquid or make sure that you crush these tablets thoroughly before administering. Hope this helps, John |

I already had liquid pepto here. I never get tablets. I looked up a site that recommended 2 teaspoons every 10 lbs. That seemed like a lot to me so I just gave her the two teaspoons and have waited. She hasn't had a movement since then.

Hope you have some sort of syringe to get it in their mouth! Otherwise you are going to have pink hands, floor, etc! hehe..
Maybe you could mix it with a little canned food?? I know my dogs would inhale canned food and not worry about a strange taste in it! |

due to the higher metabolic rate of dogs. But, something like Pepto or Maalox ...which works topically more that anything...is not likely to require a higher dose. Pepto also has aspirin in it (salicylic acid) and we don't want to overdose that. So, the one tsp per 20lbs (which I picked up years ago in one of our texts) seems like plenty and I have used that dose successfully many times over the past 26 years. For example, how much Pepto would we give to a 150 lb Rottie at that other dose of 0.5- 1ml/lb??? (75-150ml... 5-10 TBSP...2.5-5oz) Yikes. On the other hand, how much does a 150 person take? (2 TBSP...6 tsp...30 ml...1 oz) Hope she is feeling better soon. John |
