Please Help! Dog limping after injection!

Yesterday afternoon I noticed that my dog's front legs had become very stiff. He was limping and lowering his head with each step he took. He couldn't run and very quickly was unable to even stand up. He hid under an armchair, something he does when he's in pain.

He hadn't had an accident and the only thing I can think of that could have hurt him, was an injection he had received from the vet an hour earlier.

It was an amoxycillin injection administered under the skin. The vet tried twice to give the injection because the first time my dog yelped and moved. I am afraid he could have hurt something in his spine.

I took him to a pet hospital where I hoped they could do some testing. His condition was better by the time I arrived: He could walk with some stiffness/lameness in the front legs, but couldn't run.

The vet took a look at his legs and had me walk him around the examination room. He said he couldn't see anything wrong with him and sent us home.

His condition this morning is the same as when we got home yesterday. He can walk and trot with some lameness, like he's limping on both front legs. He can't run. He prefers to lie down most of the time instead of playing with me or following me around. This is very uncharacteristic of him.

I'm going to visit a new vet after he comes back from his holidays in a few days. What tests should I insist on being performed?

I would strongly suggest making contact witht he original vet that gave the injection as soon as possible.

He's on vacation until the end of the month.
And I haven't been satisfied with him in general.

Any ideas on what could have happened and what tests I should ask for?

there are a variety of things that could be wrong, but its doubtful that one of them is theinjection he received - it certainly didnt injure the spine the way you suspect, because it would be a very different reaction.

why did he receive the injection of antibiotics?

I've seen this happen to a friends dog. The shot was put in the wrong spot and the dog was in pain and limping for a day and a half. It did eventually get back to normal though. I think sometimes a nerve is stuck with the needle.

He received the injection because he had a small bite wound on his eyelid.

The good thing is he's getting better now. He's more active and has started to run again, although not in a normal way. It's like he can't extend forward his front legs. He is bending the elbows, but isn't moving the shoulders.

This may not be your dog's case, but my dog would limp for 2 days after his annual shots. Went on for years after injections. The vet said it was pshycosomatic. (sorry, I know I spelled that wrong) but in other words he was telling me it was all in his head. LoL, when we took Benji in, we knew beforehand he would come out limping.

He's been playful today, but is still running "funny". Hopefully he'll get back to normal with some rest. I'll call the new vet tomorrow.
