Doggie insurance?
What do you guys think about pet insurance? How does it work (is there like a co-pay for each vet visit)?
I am considering pet insurance for Stewie since he is ~6 y/o. I just want to ensure that if he has major problems down the line that i'll be able to afford his vet bills. Those of you with pet insurance, please state the name of the company and share your experiences and how your pet policy works including prices. THANKS!! |

ok, simple answer.....
you pay the insurance company $X every month. When you take your dog to the vet you pay them in full. You go home and submit a claim to the insurance company... They have certain guidlines they follow to decide if you are re-imbursed. If its a yes they send you money back, if not, you payed the vet bill alraedy. existing contitions are not covered. My cousin had insurance for her cats through- http://www.petinsurance.com/groups.cfm?ec=N343 I have no idea how much she payed. The website though tells you what plan options they have and how much will be re-imbursed for each type of care. The basic plan does not cover yearly exams. A quick quote on Kino, My Samoyed came out to be about $34 a month. |

My local PetSmart has a vet with various plans as well, in which you pay a set amount per month (varies from $15-27 or so here in PA) that covers the standard things, like vaccinations, blood checks, etc. Office visits to the vet are free during business hours. I don't think anything major is covered, but it's something to look into, anyway!

We have Sheltercare insurance on our 2 cats and dog. So far, what we have "gotten back" has made up for what we have paid plus some (when Luna ate a glowstick and when the cat had cystitis for months). I pay $8.49 per month for the cats (each) and $17.99 for the dog (I think) because we have 3 pets with them so we get a small discount. I have the pup on the Quickcare Gold 70 program. For accidents and illness it pays 70% of the vet bill after a $50 deductible. I like having it just because then I don't feel like cost will be an issue if she needs treatment. We have filed claims 4 times and they have been paid promptly and with no problem.
