Kota's Hips

You know Kota is slinder but not underweight. But I can still feel her bones at the top of her butt. I guess they are hip bones. Anyone else with a collie have this? You can't see it from all of her hair, and next week Kota is due for her shots so I plan on asking the vet. But I was just wondering if it's normal to feel the bones on her butt.

How old is she?

I can still feel Kody's as well. He's only 18 months tho.

I wouldn't be too worried. My vet wasn't all that worried about them. When Kody reachs 2 years, he'll be checked.

One thing you might notice, a lot of collie breeders do not test hips with collies. I've only found a handful that do. I'm of the mind, it may not be a major problem in the breed. But lets not forget it, because it could become a problem later.

Sincerely,
Cinthia

Thanks Cinthia. Kota is two now. I'm planning on asking the vet next week to see what he thinks. I'm just fearful that she doesn't have muscle tone like she should. Granted I don't take walks with her as she should and she just walks around the house being a lazy dog. She's not skinny but It just worried me that I could feel them.

If it makes you feel any better, I can both feel and see rexies hip bones. They are sharp to the touch and you dont need to squint to see them!
Here is a picture of her, certainly not a skinny undertoned doggy!

Sammy used to have very prominent sharp feeling hip bones. He was underweight and in poor condition though.
His hips are still palpable but no longer have that SHARP bony feeling. I think because he gained lots of muscle from running up hills and swimmimg as much as b/c he gained weight. He is still a slim dog.

Kota went to the vet today. She got her shots and was looked over by the vet. He wasn't worried about her hips at all. He commented that Kota has very clean ears! lol. I asked him about getting her fixed on a payment plan. He said I could pay half now and after they fix her pay the rest. So that is what I am doing. Sept. 9th is when they will do the surgery. Prayers for my puppy please! I'm sure she will be nervous.

Oh and she went potty in the office again! I think she does it because she smells all these dogs and cats.
