Exclamation New puppy...kinda clueless "new owner"

hello all...I am a new owner to a beautiful puppy..she is 5wks old and we just got her yesterday. I have nvr had a dog before so I am clueless...hehe...My question is...she is trying to go "poop" and can't..all she does is squat and try and whine...she can't go..Is there anything I can give her or do for her. If anyone can give me any advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Call the vet. They may be able to give your or tell you what kind of medicine to give and at what amount. Right now she's very young so I wouldn't want to tell you what med to use.

Maybe she got her from the pound. There are plenty of 5 weekers at the local pound here.

I agree, call the vet, she may need to be on a different food, or may need some meds for constipation. She also needs a puppy exam to rule out any diseases and take care of any worms she may (and probably does) have. MOST puppies have worms. Also she needs to get her vaccines set up.

And welcome to GP...

I agree to get her checked by a vet, but you could give her a tsp or two of yogart to help loosen her up for the time being.

That is awfully young to be away from it's littermates. I'd get some advise from your vet, definitely. Good luck.

you could try canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling). Its a natural laxative.

Definitely get to a vet for advice. At that age, pups have very little in the way of reserves.

If you got your pup from a breeder, my best advice is to send the puppy back for three weeks to give it a chance to interact with mum and siblings. So many crucial lessons learned between 5-8 weeks are more easily learned with the help of the litter.

You may have to stimulate her rectum with a wet towel, just rub her but a little. I know it is the first time owning a puppy, but didn't you educate yourself first? you should have never taken a puppy away from its mother that young. If you got her from a breeder, it wasn't a very responsible one.

Call the Vet, this may only be something small but could be something very very bad, and a deeper problem, so please call, and take her to the vet ASAP!

Yep take her to the vet, the chances are that she wasnt weaned proberly, pups shpouldnt be re-homes untill 8 weeks old at the eairlest! A sudden change in diet is the most likely cause she is haveing problems, because she is so young you will need to have a vet work out a diet for her

As your pup is very young i would ring the vet and get proffessional advice.
Please be very careful where you take her as she is so young she will have a greater chance of contracting diseases that are fatal.

Best of luck to the world of puppy love and chewed possessions

We fostered a litter of puppies that had worms and they would try to poop and couldn't and would cry, I took them to the vet and he wormed them and then they were all better. I just had to worm them at home once a week after that.

Everyone above is correct, taking a puppy away from it's littermates at 5 weeks could pose some behavior problems. One that is common is biting. When a puppy plays with it's litter mates and they bite eachother, they teach each other how to "curb" they bite so it is not so hard. Quite often when a family adopts a young pup they complain that the puppy keeps biting them and it's hard. This happened to me once when I got my puppy too young and it was terrible trying to teach that puppy not to bite. There are other things puppies learn from their mother too that are beneficial, but sometimes situations warrent getting a puppy young, and then you just deal with it as best as possible, (Like a rescue, or neglect situation.)
However, a good relationship with your vet and regular appointments can fix just about everything. I would also suggest you take your puppy to "puppy kindergarden" class. It will teach you and your puppy soo much and help foster a special bond, as well as offer the opportunity to play and meet other puppies. I always bring my puppies to puppy kindergarden.

It was always my impression that the fiber in pumpkin firms you up...any comments on this? Does it work both ways?

but as for your question call your vet... and i agree maybe worms that has her all clogged up... what kind of puppy is it? i wanna know
