I took Kaia down to the lake yesterday and it was horrible to watch. Although she still had on her dopey face she was in so much pain yesterday. She didn't even run that much. Hardly at all actually. There was a few times where her back legs were just shaking. This poor pup. I feel so bad for her. She came home yesterday and was limping again, it is happening more and more frequently.
Hubby and I have talked about it alot and feel that we may be putting her down before the end of September if she continues to decline. It is happening so fast that we can almost watch it day by day. Everyday, something else is hurting her that never used to or her limping happens just a little bit more then the day before. I love Kaia but it kills me to watch her like this. I will keep everyone updated. Kaia: ![]() |

***UPDATE***
We made an appointment for Kaia to be put to sleep on September 8th. I went outside today to see her and Koda came running up to me but Kaia didn't. I walked over to her and she started to try to get up but then started whining and had to sit back down. After about 5 minutes she was able to stand again but now she will not run at all and she is kind of walking bow legged. She has been hurting today more then I have ever seen her. I am so sad at watching her struggle to try to even walk. Sometimes she is fine but when she is hurting, it is so very painful, you can see it in her eyes. I love my baby girl but I cannot sit back and let her be in this kind of pain any longer. I know that some of you will disagree with this decision but I have no choice. I can't make her better and I cannot watch her in pain. Thank you all for the support you have given me and her since this all started happening. The degree that this has all declined in such a short time was so dramatic, I just hope that she can make it fairly happily until Sept. 8th. Thanks again. |

Kaia has a rare genetic disorder called Pituitary Dwarfism as well as grade 3 luxating patellas in both of her back knees. The PD is a disorder in which her Pituitary gland does not produce the hormones that are needed to grow and thrive. Kaia is probably a few years old but in every way, mentally and physically she is only a 6 month old puppy. However, because of what the lack of the correct hormones doesn't give her body, it dramatically decreases her life expectancy to around 2-4 years old. We have no idea how old she actually is due to the fact that we adopted her but we know she is definitely over a year but the vet figures a few years old. Her knees are what are her biggest problem are now but for 3 months of surgery and recovery only to save her for possibly and other few months, we can't really afford that and I do not think that is a very good life for her. It is only prolonging the inevitable and hitting hard on our pocketbook.

I'm sorry that this has come. I do agree that a surgery that only will prolong the inevitable is not warrented. Expecially if it will only give her a couple of months. If it were years I'd say go for it. But months.. Well all those months you would just be wondering when it was going to happen. There are some ministers that will do services for pets. I don't know if you are religious, but perhaps you could find a minister to be there with you and your dog on the 8th.

I'm so very sorry.
My heart goes out to you, your family and beautiful Kaia. |
