Exclamation Period

My puppy puppy has just started her period. It's her first one. We're getting her spayed soon. But what are the signs of a period? I don't know if this has anything to do with this subject, but her "weewee" has blown up like a balloon!!! It's huge, it seems to be tender, and licks it often. Should I be worried about this? Or is it natural?

When they come into heat the do swell, keep her away from all dogs for about a month, my bitch bled for 21 days on each heat.... Since you are planning on getting her spayed wait till 2-3 months after this heat to allow her body to get back to normal before the big op. I take it she is between 6-8 months, my bitch had her first heat at almost 8 months of age.... Licking it is very normal thats how they keep it clean. You can dab her vagina and see if there is any blood, it does sound very much like she is in heat and they do swell up.

Ugh...good luck with that.

I am very happy you are planning on spaying her. It sounds to me like she is in heat as well. Be VERY careful about letting her around ANY other dogs who are unaltered.

Mainly males is what you have to worry about, and it could trigger other unspayed females to go into heat.

Why didn't you spay her sooner? I am assuming she is about 8-9 months that is when they usually go into heat, be very careful because an un-fixed male dog can smell a female in heat for upto 2 miles and they will try anything to get to her. Good Luck!!

Why didn't she spay her sooner? could be a lot of reasons, lack of time, lack of money. It's not that big of a deal, put some panties on her so she doesn't make a mess all over the carpet, wait about 30 days (Give or take) and get her spayed.

Well Yeah Der, If she did it at six months she wouldn't of had this problem. My vet charges more for females if they have had a heat cycle.

Most vets charge more if they are IN heat at the time of spaying. This is because their ovaries and uterus are enlarged.

The vet shouldn't charge more because a heat cycle has passed though.

Either way, she's going to be spayed and that's the important thing. We all love people who are responsible enough to spay & neuter their pets!

Well the vet does charge more for an older puppy than they do a younger one some vets go by the weight of the dog. Of course if they are in heat it is more because of the enlarged uterus but they usually recommend waiting.

The reason we didn't do it sooner is because our vet told us to wait until she was six months before we got her spayed. Time flies so fast! She's about seven months now. See, we just moved into a new house, so getting her spayed just slipped our minds.

Dollface, you say to wait 2-3 months before getting her spayed. But by then wouldn't she have been in heat a second time?

Animal lover, A female dog usually has a heat cycle every six months. I know the smaller breeds mature a little faster than the larger breeds. The bigger breeds usually have there first heat around nine months of age. No, she won't go into heat again that fast you just need to wait till the swelling of the uterus and ovaries go down.

Nope she won't be in heat by then, just like shandoggy1 said you want to wait till her body gets back to normal, that is the reason for waiting. Iam one for allowing a bitch to be fully matured before spaying her, I don't agree with altering babies.... My boston came into heat about every 8 months..... Even tho you have panties on please do not leave unattended with a male, they do not stop them.... I found pantie liners or pads (depending on size of dog) for humans to work just as good in them and lot more cheaper then buying the ones for the sanitary underwear for dogs.

My intact female has not gone into heat yet at all and she is 11 months. Should I be concerned or is it that flexible?

It depends on the breed of dog, some bitches don't come into heat till a year or shortly after for larger breeds, and smaller breeds usual come into heat by 6-8 months.... My boston was about 8 months before she came into heat and she seemed to have a heat every 7 months... Our Shepherd collie was a lil over a year before she had her first heat...
