bleeding gums?

hello all,

i've recently discovered that my GSDs gums start bleeding whenever he is chewing on a bone and i've consulted a friend of mine that has owned dogs for 8 yrs. She told me that it is normal for some dogs, but I would like to know what else this could be. I will taking him to the vet in a few days, but would like to know what you guys think of this. The gums located in the left and right sides of his mouth are the ones that are bleeding. He has minimal to mediocre bleeding, nothing too too serious, but at the same time it is something to be concerned about.

Thanks

I'd be concerned as well. Are his teeth in good condition? Perhaps you could make a call to the vet sooner.

Has he always had bones or is it new to him?

He's either chewing much too aggressively or he has a gum disease like gingivitis. If it's a gum disease then your Vet. will recommend teeth cleaning. After he get's them cleaned then start burshing his teeth every day. You can also take Listerine (diluted with water) and put it on a Q-tip or cotton ball and rub all over his gums. It's the alcohol that kills germs and bacteria that build up in the mouth and cause these problems.
