well, that is because poinsettia's are primarily just irritants and are by far, not the most poinsonous plants there are. only their leaves and flowers are irritants, too.
"Consuming this festive-looking plant can be irritating to the mouth and stomach of the dog or cat that chews on or eats it. Contrary to popular belief, poinsettia is not specifically toxic. " Dr wendy brooks from ASPCA poison control: Common Name: Poinsettia Scientific Name: Euphorbia pulcherrima Family: Euphorbiaceae Toxic Principle: Not available Clinical signs: generally over-rated in toxicity. Can cause oral irritation to mouth and stomach. May see drooling, vomiting, or nausea. Signs are typically mild and self-limiting. |

When we took Bailey to the emergency vet for Parvo ( as a tiny pup) there was a pair of mini schnauzers (sp?) that devoured 4 poinsettias. The poor dogs had to have their stomachs pumped. These were small dogs and the owner said the plants were very big. The owner said they had been vomiting all day and night and finally brought them to the emergency clinic. The poor pooches looked so sick and didn't even wag a tail when I pet them. I think large amounts of any plant would probably have caused them to feel so sick though.

LOL Fireworks! Maybe that cat has used up 8 of it's 9 lives.
Thanks 'Lilpaws for putting up that great list. It's amazing how many things are poisonous. I think there may be some more that weren't mentioned; holly berries, pyracanthus berries and there are some things that may not be bothersome to every animal. There are certain weeds that are super bad news for horses but not sure if they'd hurt a dog....doubt a dog would choose to eat them anyhow. But thank you for sharing that wonderful list. It's interesting and good to know. Carrie |
