Question Eye Injury

My Jack Russell Terrier scratched her eye several days ago. I took her to the vet the day I discovered she was keeping her eye closed. The vet dilated her eye Friday afternoon 9/9/05 and her eye is still dilated 9/12/05. I'm very concerned. Does anyone know if it is "normal" for a dogs eye to stay dilated for several days. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
kathyb

Did you call your vet and ask what he/she thought it was normal? They dilated the eye so I’m sure they would know. Whenever I have any concerns in regards to my dogs health the vet is always the first person I tend to ask.

I was at our county farm this weekend, no phone. But I have a follow up appointment today to see the vet. I'll ask him then. I just wanted to check around and see if anybody had any experienced something of this nature. Thanks

That's good, he'll probably be able to let you know. BTW, welcome to GP!

Oh and keep us posted on what the vet says.

Hi Kathy and welcome to GP!

Typically eye dilation does not last this long and I would suspect another issue possibly going on there than just the fact that the eye was dilated. Hope all goes well on the return trip to the vet and please keep us updated on how everything goes!

Smile

Tater saw our regular vet yesterday. He said the other vet that saw her last Friday put Atropine in her eye & that it would cause the eye to remain dilated for a longer period of time & this would speed up the healing of the ulceration on the surface on her eye. The ulcer was healed. Her eye is starting to slowly return to normal. I'm so glad her eye is ok. She is a strong hunter and absolutely loves to be turned loose on our 60 acre farm to hunt. It's nothing short of sheer joy to watch her pick up a sent trail. She always has the biggest smile on her face. Thanks to everyone for your concern.
