I have an eleven year old mini daschund. He was attacked today by a bigger dog. The attack only last a couple of seconds before the fight was broken up. Unfortunately my dog now has injuries that I am concerned about. He has puncture wounds to the back of his neck and the left side of his neck is swollen. He will move around but is very slow and looks to be in pain. I put an antibiotic cream on the wounds and gave him Benedryl. Is there anything else that anyone can suggest to make him more comfortable?

First you should pour peroxide on the wounds to clean them before putting creams. Is your dog up to date on shots? I hope you reported this. Keep an eye on your dogs bite marks. If there is any change at all, take him to a Vet.

Thanks for such quick responses. Yes, my dog is up to date and the dog that bit him is also up to date. He is a family friend that just didn't agree with my dog today. I cleaned it with peroxide and had ice on it before putting the ointment and bandage over it. He is extremely moody right now and won't let me do much more. I have talked to the ER Vet tonight and they suggested the treatments that I have done so far. They also said to bring him in tomorrow to be checked out. I just feel so bad for him right now that I really want him to be as comfortable as possible.

I agree, he should be checked by a vet. Like Jami has mentioned, often times when a dog gets bitten their tends to be more damage to tissues underneath the skin that cannot be seen from the out side. Most of the time this need to be drained out by a vet.

I am going to definitely take him in the morning. I am no expert by any means and wouldn't be able to forgive myself if I didn't do everything I could to make him better. Thanks for the advice tonight. I knew it all along but I guess I just needed a second opinion. I am going to go sit with him for now so Thanks again for the responses. I will keep you posted on his recovery.

Update: Rocky is doing so much better. A little antibiotics and pain medicine go a long way. He has his neck wrapped and looks pitiful but other than that he is moving around slowly. He finally started eating again today. The Vet said that he was in shock last night and that explains a lot of his reactions or not so much of any reaction I should say. It will take time but he should make a full recovery. He was very lucky that he was saved from the fight. I was trying to help out a friend during the hurricane but learned never to contain animals together when they are scared. Thanks to all that responded!!
