The pros and cons of neutering Sam.
Sam is entire. What are the pros and cons (if any) of having him neutered? I realise since he's a mixed breed I should get him done but are there any other reasons and/or dangers?
Thanks. |

prostate cancer is virtually unheard of in neutered dogs. in adult male dogs that are intact, over 75% of them will have some sort of enlarged prostate or worse.
behaviorally - intact males are prone to roam, excess dominance, etc. neutering helps this. hormones can be very aggravating to deal with - many animals can even have affects on their lifestyle - i know many intact makes that will not eat when bitches in heat are around. i know an intact male dog that chews on himself when he is kept away from a bitch in heat. there is no chance of ANY accidental litters. cons - neutering has no beneficial effect on testicular cancer (which is RARE in dogs). it is a surgical procedure, and any surgery can be risky. but in the end - why keep a mixed breed dog intact? even just preventing an accidental litter if your dog ever managed to get loose, is benefit enough for the entire world ![]() |

You can get a Tardac (sp) shot to see if fixing him will make any difference at all. I can go either way for fixing male dogs, He is fully mature at 2 years of age and sure he has reached his maturity and build for his breed cross. I have 2 fixed males and one intact. Me for one I will not get my males fixed anymore since I can keep them from bitches with out a worry. Sure if they are fixed no chance of prostate cancer but that does not mean they won't get cancer anywhere else. Fixing him can and may get rid of all the dogs harmone urges, but they still do mount, mark ect even tho he is fixed. In the long run just to eliminate all that then fixing him is the wise choice
He may also even put on the weight you want once he is fixed since his testosterome will be calmed down totally Good luck |

Some people think that the lack of hormones can make a dog a little less secure or less brave. Some feel that it is better to let the hormones promote natural growth and they say it develops the bones to be stronger and denser. An intact dog will tend to be a little more beefy. I've always neutered my male dogs for the reasons above because I think those reasons are more valid or important. I wouldn't worry about the weight gain. I don't believe that's true. It's all a matter of the amount of food they take in vs. the calories they expend. So you adjust accordingly. My GSD was always very lean and so far, so is my Dobe.
My GSD I waited a little long. He became very male dog aggressive. So, when he broke his jaw by biting another GSD who was trying to run away and my dog's tooth stuck in his flesh while he ran, thereby breaking my dog's jaw, I told the vet, while you're at fixing his jaw, fix him. After that.....not a speck of dog aggression. That may not always necessarily stop it, but it tends to help. |
