Scratch, scratch

My puppy doesn't have fleas but seems to be scratching all the time. Especially on her body and behind her ears. She doesn't have a ear infection either.

The vet said just to give her some Benadryl, but I would rather find out if it's something that I can change before I start drugging her?

Any ideas?

Is there what appears to be flakes or dandruff in the fur? If so get the vet to check her for fur mites ( walking dandruff, they call it ).
Only a skin scraping will find these mites. Another possibility may be her food (allergies) or her shampoo.
Personally, I wouldn't give her Benedryl until I had ruled out other possibilities...especially to a puppy, however that's just my opinion.
Hope you find out what is causing her itch.

I was at the vet Tues and asked her about and she checked for fleas and then told me about the Benedryl, but the tard that I am sometimes goes blank and forgets to ask what would be causing it.

I haven't given her a bath in almost 2 weeks. The only think I can think of is that she had an upset tummy so I was feeding her rice and hamburger per the vet and I've started switching it slowly to her dry puppy food. Maybe thats it? Do they make a hypoallergenic food?

No dandruff at all.

Thanks for the help!!

Have the hair inside of her ears pulled out. The excess hair holds moisture, and can lead to a build up of wax and bacteria, which cause itching and infection. Also make sure she is getting Omega fatty acids every day for skin and coat. I don't know what brand of kibble your feeding, but INNOVA is one of THE best on the market. Check out the great list is ingredients.

I'm feeding her Iams but after reading the Dog Food sticky and doing some consumer research I was looking into Innova today.

Hi, My puppy had an itchy problem it was called puppy pyoderma. Does she have any bumps on her belly or on the inner parts of her leg that may have a little pus in them?? Also does she wear a collar cuz puppys always scratch when they are wearing one until they get used to it.
