Upper Tooth Root Canal?
Help. Chaos my 8.5 yr old rottie - two knee surgeries, on thyroid meds and DES has a gray upper canine. One vet wants to do a root canal - says extraction not an option because would be structurally too difficult. Another says extraction is an better option. Am a) not sure which is best for my girl, b)not sure a general vet is qualified to do a root canal(would you ask your doctor to do one?) c) floored by the cost of a root canal versus an extraction. Help!

I have a Husky who has his bottom K-9 broken and he's fine without them. Just my personal opinion I'd chose to have it removed. I've had 2 root canals on me and I would have rather just had the teeth removed.
You make a good point too on B. Did the vet explain why it would be structurally too difficult? Cause my vet wants to remove the pieces that are left in my Huskys mouth. if it's bad and you can live without it take it out. I'm no doctor though... |

I'd be going for a second opinion about that. I know the root canal would be a big expense, and I would think an unecessary one. I had a GS years ago that was kicked in the mouth when she was around 6 months old and it put her tooth out. She never missed it the way she could tear up a raw 1" thick steak two and three times a week and eat raw chicken, bones and all.

With everything else your dog has going on at 8.5 years of age the last thing I'd want to do it put her through a root canal. I'm not sure what would be so structurally difficult about removing the tooth and would seek out another opinion from someone other than a general veterinarian. jmo

Upper canine root canal
Thanks for the input! Have talked to three other vets none of whom recommended a root canal on my girl. One even highly objected to the stress such a procedure would cause her. So we are going to wait and watch carefully for any signs of pain. Any pain and out it comes. Meanwhile I am in the process of finding a new vet!

I'm glad you took the time to get other opinions and the majority feel a root canal too evasive. I know I couldn't do it to one of mine at that age. |
