My Daschund is abnormaly thirsty!!

Lately my 8yr old daschund has been really thirsty. She can drink 8-10 ounce every hour and eventually urinates all the time as well. She is also very passive now. I will take her to the vet tomorrow. Anyone knows what might cause this???

She could have a kidney problem. Early signs of kidney problems are increased thirst, frequent urination with large quantities of pale urine, inability to hold urine all night and occasional periods of low energy, lack of appetite and nausea or vomiting that last for a few days at a time.
Once a kidney problem appears, the strategy is to avoid further deterioration, if possible, and to assist the function of what is left of the kidneys. We do the former by homeopathic, herbal and nutritional treatment and the latter by reducing or eliminating the toxic load on the kidneys. Let's consider the question of toxicity first. Anything in the food or in the environment which is not usable by the body must be eliminated. This includes food preservatives, coloring agents, insecticides, pollutants and the like. This elimination is primarily done through the kidneys.
Another indication of future kidney problems is repeated attacks of bladder inflammation (cystitis). Treatment of this condition with antibiotics and the use of special diet to acidify the urine does nothing to slow down the progression of kidney disease; it only masks the symptoms.
I'm getting this information from Dr. Pitcairsn's book, NATURAL HEALTH for DOGS & CATS by Richard H. Pitcairn, D.V.M., Ph.D.
He goes into great length and detail on how to cure the problem. It's a great book, and I highly recommed it to anyone who has dogs and or cats.
I do hope your baby will be ok. Please let us know what the Vet. says.

It could also be a sign of diabetes which is usually managable with meds.

My last rottie started drinking alot and the vet found she had a thyroid issue and needed daily thyroid medicine.
I would guess thyroid or diabetes.

One of my shelties was always drinking water and going all the time too. Have the vet check her liver enzymes to see if they are in balance.

Per vet, its common for Daschunds. I'm still awaiting for her ACTH test, if positive then UltraSound and biopsy is next. If left untreated, may causer heart failure.
