Doberman Eats Rocks
Is this normal or dangerous? Toby eats rocks. He just recently got a fenced yard, so is able to be outside without me watching him all the time so I am worried. He has always tried to eat rocks, and gets a couple if he was on leash and I didn't pay close enough attention. I am worried because now he can eat them outside and I can't stop him! I have heard that this is what dobermans do, but I worry that it will give him stomach problems.
Does anyone have dogs that do this? Is it dangerous? Is there anything I can do about it?? |

Yes, this is potentialy very dangerous! It could cause an intestinal blockage or infection in the dog's digestive tract, it could perforate or tear the stomach or intestines.
Solution=remove all rocks from unsupervisable area. |

Yes, this is a potentially very dangerous problem. And could end up costing you thousands in surgery to get the rocks removed from the stomach/instestines when he can't pass them.
Supervision is needed... you can't trust him to NOT eat rocks when he's on his own. So you need to work on a good "leave it" and "drop it" command. And remove as many rocks from his play area as possible. |

What the others said. How old is he? He can't be left alone if he's doing this. If he gets a blockage, he'll be lucky to make it to surgery. This is very dangerous.

my boyfriend's husky ate rocks all the time. it CAN lead to a problem. take him to the vet maybe to have the vet examine his stomach. the vet gave my boyfriend a medicine that would make his dog throw all the rocks up. this can be done if he's got rocks in there, but it's not to the point where surgery needs to be done. just consult your vet and see what he/she thinks.

Toby is just over 4 months old. I was worried about it, but you responses didnt help!
But Thank you anyways. I live in the desert, so there is no real way to remove the rocks, because it is just rocks and a tiny bit of sand out there. He eats all sizes of rocks, so there is no way I could remove them. I was so exctied about getting him a yard so he would run around out there without me watching him every second, but his safety is more important. I might bring this up in puppy kindergarden class tonight and see if she has any suggestions. Thank you so much for the replys, I was really worried and I guess I was right to be so! |
