horrible odor

I am not sure where to post this thread but hopefully someone will know something about it.
Our almost two year old St.Bernard spayed female (rescued only three weeks ago) became etremely scared of the cable guy when he was here today. He is dog friendly and squatted down to see her when I let her out of the room. She came charging at him and at the last moment paniced and put the brakes on. She immediately emmitted the most awful smell. It was so strong I could hardly stand it. I put her back in the other room and she calmed right down. The cable guy said it was pheromones and sometimes when dogs get really scared :shiver: they release them. Is this true? My internet/cable IS fixed but it took him two tries,...should he go into dog psychology or stick with his day job?
Anyone ever had experience with this?

I read somewhere that if a dog (or cat) is scared or overly excited, the anal sacs can secrete a smelly, oily substance on the surrounding fur, causing bad odor.

Not only does it get on their fur, it can also spray a pretty good distance onto the floor, surrounding furniture, your friendly vet tech who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Oh it's nasty all right. When Lyric was younger, he had a problem with that due to overly soft stools. If they're not fluffy or firm enough, they don't naturally express their anal glands when they go to the bathroom.....in a gradual, normal way. So, the stuff builds up and they leak. Gross. So, I found out how to do that and expressed them on occasion myself with latex gloves and paper towel and K-Y jelly. Very gross. Thankfully he doesn't get plugged up anymore due to a diet change.

So, if you notice this a lot and at times where nothing stressful happens, you might want the vet to check on it.

It is indeed the grossest smell there could possibly be. LOL.

Yup-Anal glands-thats always fun, NOT! One of the worst things I have ever smelled. My dogs have done that a couple times. They do it when they get very scared.
