overweight question

Hi! I found this site, today, while researching my dog food. My two year old Dachshund, Isabel, eats Chickensoup for the Petlover's Soul.

A few months ago, when she had her last vet visit, I asked the vet if she was getting too heavy. He said she was not too heavy. . . . . . yet. He said she shouldn't gain any more weight, though.

Isabel weighed 10 pounds 8 ounces at that point. I started measuring her food, so she wouldn't gain any more weight, and I give her a handful of green beans for a snack. She gets 1/4 cup of chicken soup, twice a day, plus the grean beans, and an occasional chew toy.

She seems to be always hungry. She now weighs 10 pounds 4 ounces and is holding steady. (I got her a kitten for more exercise and they are having a blast.)

Should I be doing anything different in feeding her? I thought about getting the senior dogfood so she could eat more, but she is shiny and healthy, now. . . . . just always hungry.

I would appreciate suggestions.

I haven't met many dogs that wouldn't want to eat more if they could. Its a lot better for them to be a little hungry than to be fat.

What sort of exercise does she get? She sounds heavy, my Jack is only 9 kg and I think he could tone up a bit

Isabel gets occaisional walks, lots of toss and fetch games and she and the cat race all over the house.

I am not physically able to exercise her a lot outside.

She has a waistline.

Here is a side picture. It is not a very good one. She has some loose skin that is not filled out in her belly.

I don't think she is really overweight at this point. I just don't want her to get that way and I feel bad that she is always hungry.

As long as she has a waist line and u can feel her ribs then she is fine. Green beens are a great filler...

She doesn't look fat to me. My SIL has a dachshund, and she's quite a bit heavier-looking than yours is. Her belly (the dog's, not my SIL's) almost scrapes the floor!

Thank you, all.

I can feel her ribs and she has a waistline.

I feed her 1/4 cup dry dog food at 7:00 am and 1/4 cup at 7:00 pm. I feed her a handful of green beans around 5:00 pm. She chews on Nylabone Edibles as she wishes. Once in a while she chews on a large rawhide bone. She also gets a bite of raw meat here and there, but very rarely.

Sounds like you are doing great, what is it that makes you think she is hungry?

Isabel sits in front of me and whines and then when I get up, she runs over to her dish and rattles it. If it weren't fastened down, she would drag it all over the house.

She also whines in front of the refrigerator door because she knows the green beans are in there. When I pick up the green bean bag, she goes wild. LOL

I find she looks great. It's wonderful that you are keeping an eye on it though. Some breeds are prone to obesity. Not sure if that holds true for the doxie.
