Potatoes are harmful to dogs?

I just read that potatoes are harmful or not good for dogs in one of the stickied threads, above. Does anyone know what they do to the dog? Isabel begs for raw potato bites when I am cutting potatoes and that is one thing I have let her have occaisionally.

I don't believe any animal, including human, should eat raw potato. Potato's are a member of the nightshade family and should not be eaten raw. And especially not when they're green.

Yup, nightshade is also called 'deadly nightshade' and Belladonna.

Well, how about that! No more raw potato for Isabel. I don't peel that many, anyway. She will rarely know she can't have them. LOL

I home cook for my dog and one of the fillers I use is potato (white and sweet) I remove the eyes and add them to her stew pot. She never gets a white potatoe raw. Sweet potato yes but never white.

It's my understanding that just the leaves, stalks and stems of the potato plant, not the tuber, that are poisonous (which is why eyes should be removed).

Symptoms of potatao plant poisoning may include digestive upset, depression/drowsiness, drooling, dilated pupils, heart failure. If your dog is awake and alert, induce vomiting and get him to the vet immediately.

Really? I was always taught not to ever eat raw potato because it would make you sick. I certainly wouldn't feed it to my dog.

Cass.

I've heard potatoes are only dangerous if they're green because of the increased nicotine content. Here's an article: http://www.organicfood.co.uk/inspira...hadefoods.html

Does anyone feed their dogs green peppers? I'm not sure if they're dangerous or not.

Like a bell pepper? The big ones? I don't think their dangerous... I cut them up for my birds occasionally as a treat (they adore them), and my dog will sometimes get a slice I drop on the floor. I've also heard of other people using them as snack food for dogs.

Ugh. With all of the studies I read about everything, it is a wonder I am alive. Everything I eat is bad for me.
