Scratching
I know that there's another thread on fleas, but I was told that if i check my pup for fleas that i'd be able to see them. The problem is, he's scratching himself alot, but I don't see fleas on him anywhere, and I check him from head to toe. We put a flea collar on him and his scratching still seems to be the same....
If its not fleas, anyone have an idea what it might be? |

Grass fleas aren't repelled the same way that average fleas are. Usually, once allergies & dry skin are ruled out, grass fleas are the problem (if you don't have grass, then you can just ignore me.
) Try giving him a good long bath with a flea repellant shampoo, and scrubbing everywhere, and then see how he does after a day or so of not letting him out on the grass. Is he eating a food with corn in it? |

he use to eat dog food with corn in it, but i just recently switched him to one with no corn in it... i guess i just have to wait and see, he has an appointment with a groomer in half a week.
If its dry skin, how would he get that, he hasn't been bathed as far as i know, and if he did have it, how would i take care of that? |

Dogs get dry skin, just like people. The groomer will be able to recommend a shampoo and conditioner for him and aske for a routine you can follow that will help his skin. The groomer should also be able to tell if it's something that you should see the vet about. BTW, why did you switch his food? BTW, BTW, when was he neutered?

If you don't see fleas, I wouldn't recommend using pesticides on him. They can really do a number on a dog. I would suspect allergies and/or dry skin. I bet the groomer will have an idea for you. Maybe some oatmeal shampoo...? You can also add a little olive oil or fish oil capsules to his food. Sometimes that helps the skin a lot. Does his food contain flax? Some dogs are allergic to that. How old is this pup? If he's really young, eggs aren't suppose to be good for pups, but if he's older (not sure how old they should be) and egg a day for a while may help or vit E. If that's already in his food, don't add. That can be overdosed on and dangerous. I hope you solve this mystery soon....poor pup.

Hey. My German Shepherd is an itchy dog....he's about to turn 10 years old & since he was a baby he has always gone through "itchy" spells. It ended up being skin allergies. We have tried everything to figure out what he is allergic to & so far we cannot figure it out! He never has any fleas on him. He's a clean dog but we can't "over bathe" him because that makes his itching worse. So we just make sure he stays clean & brushed & he stays inside most of the time. He never loses any hair or anything like that. For the past several years we have been taking him to the vet for a shot for his allergies...he gets it 3 times a year. The itching stops almost immediatly.
Good luck! Stacee |

TAKE THE FLEA COLLAR OFF IMMEDIATELY! Flea collars can kill your pet and cause existing skin conditions to worsen. If you are worried about fleas, get a good product from your vet such as Advantage or Frontline.
My dogs have gotten the itchies from chiggers and poison ivy. I've also had dogs with skin allergies that were controlled with medicated shampoos. Sometimes its just trial and error until you find the right combination of shampoos and foods to eliminate the itchies. |

If it is dry skin, I would suggest oat-meal dog shampoo, it is very good for dogs with dry, sensitive skin. And also a teaspoon of oliver per day, help to improve the dry skin condition. Or if don't mind the cost, flaxseed oil is good choice. Omega 3 & 6 is what dry, itchy, sensitive skin need.
