what would cause a dog to vomit water only?
well, there is no emergency (after hours) vet in this area, but we will be taking my oldest poodle in the morning, meanwhile maybe you all might have some suggestions. This morning my poodle's bedding was soaking wet. i thought she might have urinated on it during the night (which is not that uncommon). the first thing she did when i let her out this morning was go to the water bowl and drink and drink. i made her quit, and she seemed fine. not feeling bad or anything. well i went on to work but when my husband got home her bedding was again soaked and she wanted to drink alot then. well instantly she threw up the water. my husband, not realizing that there was now a pattern, gave her some dogfood. she did not throw it up at all, but did vomit up water. he called me and i told him to not give her anything else. by this time the vet is closed. she is acting fine, but is craving water. she has thrown up quite a large amount of water despite not letting her drink any. i gave her a tagamet thinking it could be acid reflux. any ideas??? suggestions??? going to the vet first thing in the morning, but got to get thru the night.

possibly your dog is becoming diabetic, dogs do not usually suffer with water intoxication but a diabetic dog would drink very large amounts of water or she may have some blockage in her gut are her bowel movements regular, she definately needs to follow up with her vet

Hope she's alright. I'm with you on getting her to the vet in the morning as soon as possible just to make sure they rull out anything serious. Is she a Standard size poodle? Keep us posted on what the doc says tomorrow.

I agree, she needs to be seen by a veterinarian as soon as you can get her in. Best of luck and let us know how it goes.

Kidney failure causes an increased thirst too. Don't give her any medication without the Vets. approval because it could interfere with any medication he may want to give. Be sure to tell him what you gave her. I hope she will be just fine.

vet visit confirms ursula's reply
well we took mimi to the vet @7:30 this a.m. they did bloodwork and her sugar was 496!! dog's sugar should be in the 90-110 range! she is on insulin once a day until wed when they can test her sugar again to see if it is stabilizing on the once a day shot. if not we will split it up and do twice a day. she is still so thirsty and i am trying to give her as much water as possible without letting her gorge and throw it back up. thanks for all the help and by the way, she is a mini poodle-about 15 lbs or so. any suggestions on a good diebetic feeding regimen that any of you use would be helpful or if you have tips or experiences you can share about your own diabetic dogs, i would appreciate. thanks!!!

I'm sorry to hear the news but glad that you got her in and found out what was going on! Many dogs do very well after being diagnosed and still lead very full lives.
![]() I've sent a few web sites to you via PM that you might find helpful on diet and the diabetic dog. Best wishes ![]() |
