I do know of it but find the whole idea ridiculous. What possible benefit does this serve other than the owner's own vanity?

The dog isn't going to miss them and unless your using this to bypass show rules why do it? If someone is using them to bypass show rules then poo on them, someone that low down shouldn't be showing anyway as they obviously have forgotten what good sportsmanship is.

hey, if they convince people who wouldn't otherwise neuter their dogs to neuter them, then i'm all for it. i think they're outright silly though, but whatever.

That's quite absurd. Why would someone want those in the first place?

I agree with the majority - it certainly *is* ridiculous - but believe it or not, I've actually been involved in online discussions in which people finally decided to neuter *only* because this option was available to them! I recall a particular poster who's dog was headed for some *serious* issues that were not due only to posession of testicles, but were certainly exacerbated by them. His owner couldn't get over the idea of them just not being there anymore, and indeed, liked the look of them. Someone threw out the suggestion, and voila, he went and had the procedure done.
