The apples are great to give just core them first as the seeds contain small amount of cyanide that can be dangerous. This goes for the seeds of most fruits.

That is true I never thought of that. I peel and core mine so the apples are about the way I would eat them.

Why? Dogs are carnivores and have no nutritional need for fruits or veggies. If they like them, then they are ok as an occasional treat but not as a main part of the diet.

The vitamins are good for them. And I've read wolves consume the intestines of herbivores along with their contents as well as a small amount of plants.

vitamin c is very important in any dogs diet. my boxer gets a bit of oranges or pure orange juice weekly. he also loves bananas/oranges and apples i give him a bit of one now and again when i am eating one.

did not know that about apple seeds!

EEK! Thanks for the heads up Owned by Lucy. I did not know that apple seeds were poisonous!!

I also add apples to my dogs foods or simply give it as a snack. Just a little tid bit for you guys-Canned pumpkin is also good for dogs and helps to regulate their bowels, balancing diarhea and constipation. So if your dog has loose stool, just give him a spoonful of canned pumpkin. Plus it is loaded with good nutrients!

My dog Chili (the one on the right in my avatar) is absolutely *addicted* to apples. I didn't know the seeds were poisonous until about two years ago. So for a few years, Chili used to get to finish off our apple cores for us. It was probably only once or twice a month, so there was never any damage. I've read that he would have to eat quite a few at a time to have had any noticeable issues. Anyway, now he just gets a few good chunks of the apple, but no more cores.

He still watches us eat apples like a hawk and gets very moody when we throw away the cores. He has very good long term memory!

He also loves all kinds of vegetables. My favorite is lettuce. He will go crazy for a few leafs of lettuce or spinach. It's hilarious watching him try and chew it.

My Newfie doesn't eat apples but will jump to the top of our pear tree and grab one off the limb! She's been doing it for years now and I havn't noticed any sickness from it. Although I did read on my vets website that some fruit skins can be harmful for a dog, like orange peel and grapefruit peels . Also grapes and raisins can be deadly to them.
