Everyone Be Careful Of This!!

I found this on another forum I go to. Please get the word out, this stuff is bad.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is really scary when you think about it, I used to have a Swiffer Wetjet...
This is an email my sister in law sent me:

The dog is kept inside, and when he's outside, someone's with him, so the idea of him getting into something unknown was hard to believe. My neighbor started going through all the items in the house.

When he got to the Swiffer Wetjet, he noticed, in very tiny print, a warning which stated "may be harmful to small children and animals." He called the company to ask what the contents of the cleaning agent are and was astounded to find out that antifreeze is one of the ingredients. (Actually he was told it's a compound which is one molecule away from antifreeze). Therefore, just by the dog walking on the floor cleaned with the solution, then licking its own paws, it ingested enough of the solution to destroy its liver.

Soon after his dog's death, his housekeepers' two cats also died of liver failure. They both used the Swiffer Wetjet for quick cleanups on their floors. Necropsies weren't done on the cats, so they couldn't file a lawsuit, but he asked that we spread the word to as many people as possible.

Ethylene glycol (antifreeze) has a lethal dose of 4.4-6.6 ml/kg in dogs. That's a about a teaspoonful per 2 pounds of dog. A 30 pound dog would have to lick about a 1/4 cup of Swiffer Wetjet juice off his paws to die! But don't hold me to that. I don't have my calculator on me.

one molecule can make a lot of difference, depending on what it is.

Such as compounds of hydro carbon and alcholo, only missing an o.

Alcholo compounds ethanol and methanol, different in only 1 carbon chain. However ethanol is the commonly used drinking alcholo (wine and beer) where as methanol, even if ingesting a small quantities of it can lead to blindness and death.

Swiffer Wetjet Kills Dogs Warning
May 2004

This one claims that the cleaning solution in Swiffer Wetjets contains antifreeze and kills your pets if they walk on a cleaned floor. If you check the ingredients in the material safety datasheet at the Proctor and Gamble website, you see that it does contain 1% to 4% percent Propylene Glycol n-Propyl Ether. Now Propylene Glycol is one chemical used to make antifreeze, the other is Ethylene Glycol, however the concentrations in antifreeze found in your car is around 50% not 4%. According to the ASPCA, while Ethylene Glycol is known to cause liver damage in animals, Propylene Glycol in the concentrations used in the Swiffer Wetjet cleaning fluid is not a hazard for animals.

I heard this myth as well, and the spokespeople at Swiffer (Proctor & Gamble I believe) said that basically ANYTHING aside from say vinegar/water solution that you wash your floors with can be hazardous to your pet's health.

If anyone is truly that worried, they should wipe down the floors with a damp cloth after using said cleaning products. They also assured everyone that Swiffer WetJet is safe around animals.

If you are scared of using the wetjet, then you should also remove all other chemicals from your house, including stuff like your everyday soap which contains sodium lauryl sulphate, a known mutagen. They are just as harmful to your pet as the wetjet fluid.

Personally, I wouldnt use a wetjet because its falls under the "Karen hates disposale items" category.

ASPCA News Alert
www.ASPCA.org
Poison hotline: 888-426-4435

The Swiffer Wet Jet system contains 90 to 100 percent water; propylene
glycol n-butyl ether or propylene glycol n-propyl ether; and isopropyl
alcohol (1 to 4 percent). These ingredients are safe to use around pets
when used according to label directions and would NOT cause liver damage at
product concentrations.

Propylene glycol n-butol/propyl ether differs significantly from ethylene
glycol, the potentially toxic ingredient present in most antifreeze products
that can cause kidney, not liver, failure. "The public should be aware that
not all information sent via email or posted on the Internet is necessarily
accurate," advises APCC spokesperson Dana Farbman, CVT. "Therefore, it's
always a good idea to verify any information regarding pet health concerns
with a veterinary professional.
