Gagging and wretching, it's scary!!!!!

Hi, have a question...

At any given time, Gizmo will start gagging and wretching... it's like he has to vomit something, but nothing is comming out. Once, a trace amount of bile came out... but other than that, it's the coughing.

Is this normal? I've tried looking into his mouth and I can't see anything in there, my vet said to wait and see... but I'm worried about him chocking on something!

Does it happen when he's wearing his collar? A lot of toy breeds have soft tracheas and palates and can make an awful noise.

I think all toy puppies should be on harnesses, not leashes. And better to start them young so they don't get used to the restraint of a leash and then go hog-wild when given the relative freedom of a harness.

Actually, neither.... lol

he's so small right now, that a collar is too big for him, and I'm looking into getting a kitten harness for him

As for kennel cough, it's possible, but I've noticed that he does it after he eats.

You need to take him to the Vet. to have this checked out. Poor little guy. I hope it's only a cold and not a trachea problem.

I've mentioned it to my vet, and he monitored him for 20 mins, and of course he didn't do it in front of him. I liken it to someone who has a hyper-active gag reflex. Has anyone heard that?

It's mainly if he's been eating, so I wonder at times if he's not chewing his food all the way through. He tends to slobber on it and then swallow it whole.

Okay, this might sound really stupid, but I noticed your doggie has a "moustache". Is it possible that some of that hair is going into his mouth when he is eating and sticking in his throat and making him gag? I say this because we used to have a Lhasa and he did the same thing when the hair around his mouth was too long.

How is Gizmo doing? Is he still gagging? I haven't given any help or advice on this thread but I was curious how the cutie is doing. Hope his doing better.

Well I tried trimming a little bit of the fur and it's helped a bit, although it hasn't taken the gagging compleatly away. I keep monitoring him to see what triggers it, and right "now" it's looking like he'll take a drink, then will go and play immediatly after, so maybe he's jostleing the water around in his stomach?

I'm no vet, so I don't really know what's casuing it. Thanks for the trimming the fur idea, it definitly helped!
