Embarrassing question about humping and neutering

Okay....this is highly embarrassing, but I don't know where else to ask it...

I have a 6-7 month old male poodle mix....I adopted him secondhand and so we don't really know his age. The vet I went to went by what I said and verified it with the presence of puppy teeth. By the time I had scheduled the neutering, the puppy already had all his adult teeth in and was supposedly 6 months old. I wanted him neutered earlier but the vet wouldn't do it.

Anyway, Mocha has been neutered but he still frequently gets "excited" and actually I've always wondered why he looks like he has two sets of testicles.....when he is excited, there are two sets of "testicles" present...one right down low and one up closer to his little thing.

When I picked him up from the vet, they said that they removed the testicles....they had to pull it up and remove it...so they removed the lower set (of what I see).

Now when he has his little "excitement"....he still has the other set of "testicles"......does that sound right? Should he still be getting this? Also, he is continuing to hump my older female dog....doesn't seem to stopping this behavior at all.

I always thought that Mocha was already way sexually mature and wanted him neutered earlier....too bad my vet wouldn't concur.

Actually I don't find it embarrassing at all, its very much a part of the dog world and something that happens from time to time.

From what your describing it doesn't sound like testicles but actually "lumps" on either side of the lower penis, they can often been seen when the male is excited but they aren't testicles. It happens with both neutered and intact males. The two round objects you are seeing are called the bulb of the penis. It is really just one large area of spongy blood filled tissue but it has two lobes. These fill with blood rather dramatically when a dog gets an erection and do often have appearance of subcutaneous testicles alongside the penis. Yep, neutered dogs can still have an erection.

The humping isn't sexual in nature but more of a dominance thing. It sounds like your boy simply wants to establish whos in charge with your female.

Whew...thanks. I didn't know if it was appropriate to use the appropriate scientific terms! Thanks for the great explanations. And you are so right....this definitely sounds like dominant behavior from Mocha. Appreciate it so much!

No problem I added additional info on what those lumps actually are.

Regardinging Humping

She is right about the Lumps. I have Rio who is a male and when I brought his 3 year old brother to live with him they had never met. The first two days they were both trying to hump each other. I was getting so upset, I didnt know what was wrong. I guess they figured out who was dominant. I cant tell on that one. Think its RIo but they just get along. Anyway vet said they do it for dominance. They also said a great way to get the dogs to stop is get an empty can put a few pennies in it and shake it when they try to hump each other or something else. They hate the noise and associte the humping with the noise after a while. Dont know how scientific it is but it works. When in doubt I always call the vet they think Im a nutty doggy mom anyway. I think I own part of my vets business.
