there is usually a few reasons for this, 1 is if the dog is being kept in a wet environment, and the second is what type af nail cutters are you using, you may also need to look et the diet!

his nail are usually very black. Hes mostly an inside dog and it not wet in here. i was worried about it being a diet issue. What in the diet whould do this. i dont use clippers on his yet. he gets enough walks to file them down. what should i do? is it something to worry about?

Perhaps it's just the result of them being 'filed' down on walks? Have a really close look and feel at them (snap a picture if you can).
If you're really worried call the vet and ask if it's something to be concerned about and if it's worth making an appointment. Cass. |

Yes, if he is chewing on them, he can turn them white. You know how your nail looks if you bend it, or hit it, the nail turns white, like it's damaged, same thing for a dog. Guilotine type cutters can also cause white spots on nails.
I'm not sure what kind of dog you have, but, I've never met a dog that can keep it's nails completely under control, through walks alone. When the dog is standing up, on all four feet, no nail should touch the floor. If he clicks when he walks on a hard floor, they are too long. Long nails can cause permanent damage to the foot, pads and joints throughout the leg. My dogs get miles of exercise and running each day, and I still trim once a week using a dremel tool. I think there are some threads that deal with how to cut nails, but you're free to ask questions here also, and you'll get many good responses. |
