Stickers...

Hello

We have a problem... well actually we have lots of problems, and they are called stickers!!!

We have in our yard little stickers, they hurt pretty bad and go deep into the skin.
Before i let the puppys out I went through the yard and picked all the stickers. but they come in from the pasture, too. we sprayed them outside but for this seasons stickers it was too late anyway.

So I am sitting down with tweesers and check the little paws for the stickers, or parts of them.
But i must have missed one in my little Ankas paw. I see a swelling but no sticker, she is very patient when i look for them, they all know they feel better afterwards.
I soak it with Epsomsalt, but I was wondering what else to do, since you do not see where it is sitting.

I was wondering if you know of a Tarcream, that has the ability to get puss and objects out of the skin. I aked in the pharmacy but they haven't heared of it, but from experience I know that does not mean a thing. they are often just too lazy to look.

So If you now of it , can you give me the name so I can get it at the pharmacy. Having it send from Germany would take too long.

Or if you know anything else that will get that sticker out there...

Oh I know what you mean about stickers. In California we had bushes of them and we called them Goat Heads. They had two big horns sticking up and a pointy billygoat gruff sticking down. We couldn't go outside bare foot and the buggers would pop the tires on our bikes. They would get in the bottom of our shoes and get tracked in the house. There is nothing worse than getting one of them embedded in your heel while stumbling around for the bathroom light switch at 2 in the morning. I would wake up the whole house with my howls. As kids we would dare each other to walk across the yard barefoot to see if one of us could get back without getting stuck. Sort of like walking across a mine field. Well, enough ranting....on to the solution.

My Mom would use duct tape or glue to get the stickers out. If she could see the sticker she put the duct tape against it very lightly and at an angle. You don't want to push the sticker in farther. If she could't see the sticker she put glue on the area and blew on it until it was dry, then she just pulled it off and the sticker came with it. Both of these are fine for humans because we can sit still but I don't know if your dog will sit still for these methods.

We had those sooo bad when we live in Cayman. They were spikey and hurt like hell when they got to your skin. We moved from Cayman nearly a year ago and still find them stuck in beach and dog towels that have been washed and picked over hundreds of times. We would also have to sit and search Lucy every time we would come inside or they would end up in fun places like the bed. She has long hair/fur (even on the bottom of her feet) so they rarely made it deep enough to get to her skin so we just pulled them off by hand (wearing goves)

We escaped them when we moved to Maine but now it SC we are having to deal with them again. I wish there was some way to get rid of them without killing the other grass and plants in the area too

Oh I see, you what I am talking about.......
som call them cockaburrals(???spelling???) or something like that....

We found something to spray them, supposed to work pretty good, well we did not do the backyard, because thats the pups playground, we did everything in front of the hous and along the driveway. we hope that helps for the next season, the backyard is due when they are old enough to go for longer walks.

The glue is a nice idea, but my fingers are starting to get used to them....
The coats are full too, but this is a minor problem, they can be brushed out amazingly easy.
but you all are right, they are all over, and guess who finds them with their bare feet???
These things are really mean sometimes i think they have ancores to stay stuck to you.

Sorry, I have no brilliant ideas, other than I understand.. we have goatheads here and oh yes, they have stuck my pugs. Poor guys stop and wave their paw at me to pull the nasty thing out. Those stickers have also flattened three bike tires, I had to do some serious upgrading in bicycle tires, because I couldn't go anywhere without winding up with a flat. Grr!!!
