Ear Infections
Well, Baxter has an ear infection, which totally bums me out since I check his ears every weekend. Now I have to put in 8 drops of Ottomax twice a day for 10 days and he hates it.

Hi
know that feeling, it is not nice... But checking is not enough, better clean them once a week. I warm the earwash up to clean, that is nicer for my dog. Don't you have to clean the ears before you put the drops in? I warmed the drops ,too i had for her. I put it in a warm water bath. that makes it nicer. It is still not her favorite activity but she comes and is nice while i do it, i always give her a traet afterwards, she enjoes the massage very much, too, when you did put the drops in. hope your dog get's better soon. i guess you have to torture him for about 7 to 10 days?! Hope it is done then.... |

I know the feeling too.
Both Farley & Chloe are currently battling ear infections. The groomer had a new shampooer & I think the last time they went for grooming she got water in their ears. Both are now on Otomax & Synotic twice a day plus cleaning for 10 days, then back to the vet for a recheck. I spoke with the groomer & he was full of apologies and said he had other complaints and has since replaced her. He, without my even hinting, took care of the vet bill for the exam. |

Chronic Ear Infections
My two Cockers always have had ear problems. Rio's I have really gotten under control. We keep all the medication on hand so as oon as we see something starting we can handle it before it gets to bad. Nicholas is another storey. Since we got him last march, it is an everyday thing. We check his ears every night, and usually end up doing a cleaning too. He is so used to it by now and seems to appreicate it. I use baby wash clothes to clean around the outer parts of his ears they are soft and easy to clean. I feel so bad for them when their little ears hurt. I hope Farley and Chloe get well fast.

Yep, I have to clean the ear first, then put the drops in. It's a yeast infection so it was probably caused by moisture getting in during his last bath.
I'm a first time dog owner so maybe you can give me tips on cleaning/drying his ears better. I've heard that you shouldn't stick the cotton balls into the canal, to clean only the portions you can see. But, when I was at the Vet's getting his ear checked they told me to go ahead and get in there with the cotton. I know that dogs have a long ear canal but I'm afraid I'm going to hurt the poor baby. |
