Mystery vomitting and constipation
I have a 6 year old Sheltie, Mishka....
Yesterday when I got home, I let her out and she ran out and vomitted in the grass...I inspected it and saw that it was mostly her food from breakfast over 8 hours ago but did notice like a half round thing of something I don't recognize...yes, I poked and prodded at it but couldn't identify it...it looked like half of a tiny ball, but I can't figure out what it is. Anyway, I noticed that last night she was whimpering some and when she went out again she seemed to have some kind of constipation. She seemed fine today. I just got home from the movies and came home to a huge pile of vomit....it was all of her dinner from tonight. When I let her out again, she repeatedly squatted down but looked like nothing was coming out. What could be wrong? I also have a puppy, Mocha and he is fine. He hasn't vommited and has not had any stomach problems and if anything, he would be the one to get into things. I have not given them any unusual treats...I stopped giving them rawhide because Mishka got sick on them, Mocha is fine with them. The only new thing is a cow hoof that someone gave me to give Mocha a try...and Mocha is the one who mostly chews on it..and he's fine. What should I do? I don't know if the vet can do anything. Mishka seems fine right now.... ![]() |

Since there was an object that couldn't be identified in the vomit yesterday, more vomitting going on today and you have a dog that appears to be constipated ( straining but no result ) I personally would be thinking blockage. Perhaps the other half of the round object from yesterday and would take a trip to the vet just to make sure.

sounds like a vet trip is in order to me. i agree with crossfire- i'd be very worried about a blockage.

How would the vet diagnose a blockage and what would/could they do for it? I'm just wondering. Sigh....I'm not sure what she could have gotten into and this is a mystery. Thanks for the advice.

have to comment on this
i agree it does sound like a possible blockage. dogs are notorious for eating things that are inedible and undigestable and that can be a serious problem, even fatal. a long time friend of my boss called sometime last year that her giant schnauzer had been having stomach problems, not eating, vomitting, etc. he had trouble keeping things down. she had taken him to the vet several times and they did the usually round of antibiotics, x rays, etc. he would continue to deteriorate until the decision was made to do exploratory surgery. when they opened him up, entwined in his stomach and intestines were the chewed up remains and strings from tube socks. the socks were chewed and swallowed and had become entangled in his digestive tract so bad there was no help for him.
also remember that dogs that vomit can become dehydrated very quickly. shellie~ |

Well, Mishka made it through the night fine. No vomitting yet today. She's gone out...hasn't tried to poop yet. She's been playing with Mocha this normal per usual. They're both taking naps right now.....I'll keep you guys posted.

Stuff won't be tolerated in the stomach for very long. If it won't come out one way, it will come out another. I was thinking blockage too as I read your post. But also, if something is undigestible to your dog and it can't be broken down enough to go out of the stomach in a reasonable amount of time and into the intestines, it will come out in the form of reverse peristalsis...vomitting. If that unidentifiable object was not the whole thing, there could still be some in there. I'd watch her for a few more times and see if the rest comes out from one end or the other. If she starts this again, I'd definitely take her to the vet. Blockages are life threatening. Good luck.
