biting her belly

I've noticed lately that Boni keeps nibbling at her belly..She's nine months old now and i heard that when a female dog reaches at nine months.. her menstruation ( i dont know what the term is for dogs ) starts... i was wondering if this was a sign of hers nearing??

i would really just be looking for a flea if she is nibbling. signs of her estrus (her heat cycle) would be swelling of her vulva (bottom side), discharge from a clear pinkish tint to bright red blood, restlessness and some dogs will lick their "privates". But if she is nibbling her belly she might just be chasing a flea

I agree with Hugo, sounds more like an issue with the skin, whether it be fleas, slight allergy flair up or just dry skin.

Try to see if she is doing it in just one area or all over, part the hair and get a good look at the skin....is it nicely colored or very pink to red in color? Does the skin look nice and moist like the skin on your own body or does it appear scaley or dried out?

If your not familiar with what to look for when it comes to fleas....part the hair and look for little bits of "dirt" which almost resembles pepper bits about the fur. Even if you don't see a flea if you find flea dirt the fleas are there.

I'm surprised that dogs aren't licking & chewing their belly's all the time considering all the places they touch during the day. I know I would itch to pieces!
