I just adopted my baby from a shelter who gave her 8 days to live. I couldnt look at her and not know if she made it past friday to a new home so i decided i had to take her home. They informed me that she was a stray which made me wonder how a 3 pound 12 week old puppy lived out in the streets. Unfortunatly, Molly ( my puppy ) has seen so much in the little time shes been here and to make matters worse, shes suffering from mange. I dont know much about this sickness though ive done alot of reserch to help me better understand her condition. Despite everything shes been through, she loves to play and is friendly unless you touch her food bowl, which i understand he growling at me for and were trying to work with her on trusting us. But i have a few questions about her mange. She has Demodectic Mange. The shelter gave me ear drops, eye cream, as well as penecilyn to reduce the swelling. Shes only missing Hair from her eyes and a little around her nose and under her mouth. As you can see in the pic i attached.
Questions i have are: ..IS this all the medicine i need to make it go away? Ive heard about dips and such but i dont want to over due it if she has all she needs. .. What are the signs that its gone? any suggestions, comments, stories, would be wonderful. I just want to help her have a great life and make her forget about the past and give her a chance to be a puppy and to feel good. Please help! ![]() |

You are sure that it isn't sarcoptic mange?? She looks pretty red and swollen, when my dog had demodex we treated her with ivermectin (dosed and given from my vet) and benzoyl-peroxide shampoo, almost all of her hair was back within 3 months, she had to have a skin scraping every single month, and then we continued with meds until we had two months straight of negative skin scrapes. I caught hers very early on though, and she only had a few small patches here and there. Congrats on your new baby, and I wish you all the luck

Awww poor baby, bless your heart for taking her in and giving her all the love she deserves.
I have never had an experiences with mange though I have done a little research on it. There are MANY very informative, very helpful articles out there so I woulod suggest some Googling. Did you take her to the vet yourself or are the meds she is on just what was prescribed from the shelter vet? |

I would take her to your own vet and get his or her opinion on how to continue.

I agree, I'd take her to own vet, have a skin scraping done and proceed from there. Typically other forms of treatment are given rather than just something to keep the swelling down.

Hi, i know what you are going through and it is rough. I also just adopted 2 black lab puppies, now 11 weeks old. I have only had them 2 weeks, but they have already been through a bad case of worms
and now are showing signs of mange . I don't know what kind of mange it is yet, their vet appointment is in 3 days. I have an older dog too, so i am hoping it is not a contagious type of mange. I have heard neem oil is excellent at treating mange. I have not tried it as i wish to wait until after the vet sees the pups. Good luck with your treatment with your baby. Let me know what works best for you. I have done a lot of research in the past 2 days on mange but still feel clueless! ![]() |

Good for you giving this baby a home.
As for the mange I also wonder if it is sarcopic??? if it is dermadectic then you need a particular wash as well. Diet really helps as well. So feed her up on healthy things lol Let us know what your personal vet says PLEASE... and a big hug to you and your baby (whats her name?) |

demidex is actually quite common and is generally a sign of a compromised immune system...... I like the others would get your pups to your own vet... they will do skin scrapes and likely give you a medicated bath for her..... and then I would also get her onto a really high quality food..... I would actually choose a raw diet (but that is just me) and try to boost her immune system.... many puppies have demidex it is actually quite common, but they are able to fight them off..... adults as well.... well you see a pup with actual demidectic mange.... it means that there immune system was unable to fight off the mites and it became more systemic..... not surprising at all for a stray puppy as small as your little guy.....
If you can get the immune system boosted and treat for the outbreak you have right now.... it is likely that you won't have to deal with this again.... but like the others said, off to your vet you go. S |

Lyme dips
I adopted a Boston Terrier with demodectic mange and the vet gave her a series of lyme dips to kill the mites. The skin scrapings eventually showed that she was clear of all infection.
Another thing I found is a product called Revolution. I can only find it on Canadavets.com. It's like Frontline, only better. It actually kills and prevents mange (sarcoptic) mites, prevents/treats heartwork, internal and external parasites, fleas, ticks, etc. It's pretty much amazing. But that might be worth considering. A vet is definetly a good first step. Don't let them swindle you into too much, but the lyme dips really helped quickly to solve the problem. Her hair is all back now and she looks great! Best of luck with your pup. He's cute...even when pink and bald. |

Just found this thread for the first time, since I am going through a similar situation with a new foster dog.
I feel just like Erica did- a little lost and confused. This condition is sort of strange because each vet I talk to treats it a little differently. It can be frustrating for the vet also, because every dog seems to respond to treatments in their own unique way, which makes it all the more difficult. I just wanted to say- Molly is so lucky to have you on her side. Good job, Erica! Please update us on her progress- I'm sure she is much happier in her forever home! |

Lucy had demodectic mange. I took her in for her spay and they diagnosed it then with a skin scrapping. The doctor gave her antibiotics for some infectious sites on her stomach, and told me to wait it out and see if it got better or worse before we did the dips. Hers went away almost totally (you can still sort of see it on her forehead, but not badly) without the dips, and I haven't had to go through that.
Take your little one to your own vet and get a diagnosis from him before you start any treatment. Good luck! |
