Question Anal Gland removal

Has anyone here had it done? We talked with our vet about it and I was surprised at the cost.

Harley has had it done twice. One we he had some teeth removed and once during a grooming. I was not charged either time.

I heard it can be risky and can cause bowel leakage of stool if you remove the sacs. I have a 5 month old pup whose anals I have to express about every two weeks. How old is your dog? Is it already neutered or spayed? I just would hate to put them under for anal gland removal or anytime. We talked about it on global paw before and they posted me some web-sites on it. I'll see if I can find it for you.

We spoke at length with the surgeon and he wants to do one side and then go back and do the other. This lessens the chance of any loss of control over her bowels.

I have heard that a good premium food that produces firm stools will eliminate this , or can, eliminate it. Good luck

Thanks so much,..her stools are fine. The glands are not impacted. She just expresses them whenever someone comes to the door or she gets slightly excited.

i'd work on this from a behavioral standpoint, not a surgical one.

That is EXACTLY what I thought when the dr told us it was going to cost $3000.

Has anyone here ever dealt with the "expressing" due to excitement,..behaviorly?

Someone please help

I had our last rotties glands removed. Towards the end of her life they were always infected. I would spend $500 on medicine each time to get them cleared up.
The removal cost about $700.

I don't know about other dogs, but I know of a couple of pugs that have had theirs removed. The recovery took quite some time, and the dogs were quite uncomfortable. Not a fun thing to have done.. I think I'd give a try at working on training/behaviour first, THEN consider that final option.
