without going into a loooong discourse, what i did when my dogs were on barf was simply to try and replicate, as closely as possible, a fresh kill: primals (muscles meat), as many internal organs as possible and bloody bones (seperate feeding).
You've got to be really careful with the amount of liver as Vit A toxicity could result from overfeeding of liver, os so we were told. I found that the hardest part to get were unbleached tripe and the stomach, but once a year or so, due to religious festivities which allow slaughtering to take place at places of worship, some of us managed to sometimes get the stomach which was being discarded. All I can say is my sewer looks and smells better than a bag of that stuff! For good measure, I supplement with a pinch of an all-round formula once a week to once a forthnight. So, for me, the ideal approach would simple be: grind up an entire cow sans hocks and head and hide, bones seperate, and share it with a grop of freinds. Practically from butchers, it would be: primals, tripe, stomach (when available), liver (v v v small quantities), heart, lungs, kidney and brain and very spread out supplementing. All else my dogs didn't seem to need and I guess their present condition speak for the 3 or so years of our earlier practices. ![]() |

Good to hear that I can refreeze. Well, you all can call me crazy, because i believe i bought a half cow today. I bought 5 boxes of leftovers (one was fat i did not freeze so just four to use). The first box i saw was small so i said, well I take five, makes five dollars, that'll be allright.... So i guess we are started now, @ feinwerkbau: Yes I know that stomach is nast, but the dogs love it, used to get it in germany alot for treat, the butcher does give that away in Germany, well I do not know if they are really allowed, to. but they do it, here i asked arround and they do not want to do it because by the healthdepartement they are not allowed to. turned out the boxes were way bigger.. so i have a half cow in the freezer, now;th bones probably last me untill next year, surprised how much meat was in there. so i guess i bought a three month supply of beef for all together 15dollars (when i don't count the tails). Well so That just leaves me some poultry left to buy. May be able to get a stomach next week, so I can freeze that too. not looking forward for emtying that but oh well, what we all do for our dogs... the little ones got their first raw meat today, Kessy knows it already and the little ones had scraps before, too. They graved it, they couldn't get enough, and Kessy was watching closely if something fell from the back of the truck while I was bagging the stuff. |
