This is a great idea. Put it in a corner if you can.

I have my catboxes on the dryer in the laundry room in a corner...my kids love litter cookies! I even have to block that room by having the door shut where only cats can fit. They havent gotten into litter in years though.

One family I know put a cat door in a bathroom door, and then put the litter box in the bathroom. The dog could not fit through but the cat could. Cat did spend a lot of time sleeping in that bathroom though - maybe a little worried about walking back out. How about putting litter box up on a tv table or wooden stand?

We have a kitty door also that goes to our basement where we keep the litter box. If our dogs had the chance they too would be in dinner heaven snacking down on some kitty crunchy.

My dad has a kitty door in the door that leads down to the basement that his dog can't fit through for that same reason.

Also, with the baby gate...what if you put the baby gate up 6 inches off the floor? Then the kittens could go under it, instead of having to jump over it? I am sure the tension in the gate would allow you to do it without it sitting directly on the floor.

What about putting the litter box under a bed? Can your dog fit under the bed? I am sure your cats can.

I put my litter boxes in the closet and used the bedroom door as a sheild to the dog. At the end of the closet where the boxes are the closet door is open about 6 inches. Then the bedroom door is proped open with door stops with about a 5 inch gap between the closet door and the door itself. The cats walk about a foot behind the door and then make a tight turn into the closet. The dog can't navigate the complext turns and consequently she doesn't get into the litter (although she'd love to!).

Before I just used a baby gate and put my fat cat (who can't jumb a couple feet over a baby gate but can make it onto the counter.......)over it when he looked like he needed to go.

Good luck
