Outside Dog

I am new here - I was trying to find out something. Someone set out a little dog at my house last week. It appears to be about 6 mths. old and maybe a mixture of rot/husky or ger. shep/husky. Really light blue eyes! What I am wondering I have 10 cats and I have no where to keep the little dog this winter. I only have a dog house on my porch. I am wondering how do you keep dogs warm that stay outside? I put some straw in the doghouse today but he is in a chair on the porch right now. It is supposed to get to about 32 degrees overnight. I don't really know alot about dogs since I am more of a cat person! Any ideas? The dog house is one that the top comes off halfway up blue and white from Walmarts about a year ago. Is this suitable??

First off welcome to Global Paw. In my own personal opinion I don't believe that any dog should be outside 24 / 7 and while there are many breeds that love the cold weather ( Husky / Mal etc.. ) even the owners of those breeds have additional things to keep their dogs a bit warmer.

Straw does help but what about when the temp drops below zero? Does the dog have somewhere a bit warmer to go? How do you plan on keeping it's water from freezing solid? Other things like frostbite would be a concern. Many things come to mind on why it really isn't a good idea. While I can appreciate and even commend you for wanting to find out how to go about trying to keep the dog warm I'm just not one to agree with keeping a dog outside.

I can appreciate your circumstance with ten cats in the house though. Have you considered trying to find the dog a home where it can live inside?

lavender--have you considered rehoming this dog? Or even putting him into a breed rescue? He could find a good home through breed rescue that he would be able to be kept inside

Outside dog

I have put an ad in the newspaper. I have put the dog on petfinders.com and lassie come home (NC). Also spoke with animal rescue but they don't have any room. So I am at a standstill right now. Any NC people here?

The animal shelter here will take the dog. They keep it 3 days then euthanize the dog. I can't bear the thought of that!

lavender-- I hate the thought of a dog having to live outside, but you are doing the best you can. Hopefully someone will be able to take the dog in sooner or later.

Incase someone does respond to your ad or on petfinder, I'd really suggest "investigating" the people. You should ask them things such as where would the dog sleep? Will they train it? Will they take it to classes and socialize it? Have they ever owned a dog before? Have they ever had experience with either of the breeds that it may be mixed with? Do they have references that you could contact(specifically a *vet*)? I wouldn't hound them and treat them as criminals, but make sure they are a suitable home and that they could handle this dog.

you could always put a heat lamp in the dog house and depending on how your porch deals with cold weather some blanket on the porch so its not so cold on him

Couldn't you just find someplace in your house for him? Just one more little animal? And in the meantime you could try to find him some good, loving people who would be good for him. He's just a baby and needs to be with someone. Dogs do not do well alone....not as well as cats because they're pack animals. They need warmth and love from a person. You are good to take him off the streets. Who would dump a puppy like that or do you think he wandered off from his owners? He does look like a Rott/husky type or GSD/husky. He'll be a lot of dog one day and needs plenty of socialization, seeing people and dogs, different places etc....and some training right away or he'll end up being pts some day. I do hope you can find him a good home or make room for him if you possibly can.

A heat lamp is a good idea but be careful that he can't chew on the cord or that it could fall down and catch the straw or something else on fire. Puppies chew things, can get hurt and get into all kinds of mischief. So be careful.

Best wishes. Keep us posted.

Do you think he will be a big dog??? I also have a 3 year old granddaughter and don't think that would work either!

I just wanted to add real quick that on the Animal Precinct show in Detroit they usually make sure there is straw and blankets and stuff inside the dog's shelter and they put a carpet flap over the opening to insulate somewhat and to keep the wind out.

Lavender ~ Check with the following to see if they would be willing to take this little one in. The pup may not be a cross at all but simply a breeding gone bad producing those blue eyes. Hint...hint. If my hint isn't coming through send me a PM.
