Green Discharge from Gums
My dog, a 8 year old shepherd mix, has had a green discharge from both sides of her lower gums for the past several months. The gums seem to be very inflamed.
I have treated with hydrogen peroxide and betadine generally tried to keep the gums clean, but the problem does not go away. In the morning, there is typically dried greenish goo that is caked to her fur underneath her gums. Other than this problem, her health seems to be fine; her teeth were recently cleaned but the problem persists. I did give her keflex for a while and that did eliminate the discharge, but the problem returned shortly after she stopped taking the medication. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. |

All I can say is go to the vet! Your dog may have gum disease or decay and only a vet can diagnose and fix that. I just went through this with my older cat. He had to have a tooth extracted and had to be on antibiotics. Does your dog eat fine? Has your dog lost any weight?

she needs to see a vet. gum disease that serious is very bad for the dog- the infection can get into the blood, it can cause damage to the heart, damage to the kidneys, etc.

If you noticed something wrong a few months ago you should have called a Vet. then to get professional advice, and I'm sure the Vet. would ask that you bring the dog in ASAP. I can't imagine the damage that infection has done to the roots of the dogs teeth, not to mention the pain the poor little girl has been going through. I hope by now you have taken her in for treatment.

Dental issues that result in infection usually require more than a short burst of Keflex to solve the problem. She needs to be seen by a vet and hopefully since its been going on for several months the infection hasn't gone into the bone.
