Motion Sickness...
I took Mazie in for her last set of shots today, so she's good for a year.
On the way there, I noticed that she threw up in the car. When we got to the vet, I cleaned up the mess and we did our thing. We went to Petco to socialize her some more, and get her a couple new toys.. We also gave her a couple treats off the snack bar and gave her some water. She did fine from the vet to Petco (3 minute drive) and from Petco to Walmart (5 minutes) but threw up again on the way home from Walmart (35 minute drive) ... I'm pretty certain that it's motion sickness; Sheba had it too. I was wondering if there was anything I could give her before these trips that would settle her stomach? I remember we gave Sheba something for it, but I don't recall what it was.. I think it was doggie dramamine or something similar, and it lasted long enough to get to Portland (2.5 hour drive). She does fine when she rides up front in my lap, but she's getting way too big for that... Thanks in advance! ![]() |

Cocoa had motion sickness for the first two years of her life. We cured it simply by forcing her to ride in the car, and by not feeding her before rides. She hasn't gotten sick in the car for over two years.

Sammy was a big car puker when I got him- any trip longer than a few minutes or with lots of turns.
He got used to it and is fine now but I don't feed / give water too near a time he's going on a car trip. For a while I only took him on short trips to fun places - like the dog park etc so he had no reason to be nervous. Now he goes everywhere with me and doesn't seem to have a problem. I'm so glad-- dog puke smell in the car all summer was no good. |

As a rule dogs don't usually get motion sickness like humans, most of the problem stems from nervousness. there is a natural remedy called Calms for dogs that may help with the trips. But mostly I would say get her used to the car by taking her on short trips and have something fun for her to do at the end of the trip. Like a walk through town to meet people.

Thanks for the comments.
I'll have to take her in the car with me more often then. She loves going for rides, as long as she can sit up front.. My dad realized today that we need to socialize her more...and I've been telling him that for a month now... We went to Petco and it took 15 minutes for her to get used to one of the trainers that happened to be there. She loves other dogs, is skiddish around other humans, and thinks shopping carts are evil. She barked at a shopping cart that was just sitting there, motionless... and then ran and hid behind me.. I couldn't help but laugh. The trainer lady told us that Mazie was doing very well in the store and said that with a couple more visits to there, she should be able to walk around without being too nervous. I'm hoping I can start obedience training her there next month... Just hope the weather holds out and that the roads don't get too icy... |

My dog had motion sickness when he was a puppy. We "cured" it by restricting food (he ate in the morning, and we would go on our "adventures" in the evening and feed him his dinner when we got back) and just forcing him to ride in the vehicle a lot. We would take him on short little trips all the time to help get him acclimated. Over time he slowly stopped getting naseaus.
