My lil "girl" is growing up!!!

Hello all!

I am the proud owner of a 7 1/2 month old beagle (female) and a 5 month old boxer/lab mix male. We purchased the beagle from a breeder at 9 weeks and rescued the male from a shelter at 9 weeks, but he was already neutered.
I have no intentions of breeding the beagle either, so of course will get her spayed.

The Vet we have been taking her to for the past 5 months told us that we should do it when she is between 6-12 months, which she is now. For some reason I assumed that she wouldn't start with her lil "cycle changes" until a lot closer to the 12 months, and because of the chaos of the holiday season (and a few other reasons) thought I'd wait until January to get it done. About 2 days ago my fiance noticed that her nipples were kind of swollen, and that she looked a little swollen "down there". Also, I noticed a little bit for clear discharge and just seems like her mood has been changing.

WHAT DO I DO NOW?

Is it safe to take her to the vet to get spayed now or should I just wait until her lil cycle begins and officially ends before spaying her?

She is inside all the time and our male is neutered, so I don't think she has any chance of getting pregnant, but this is my first puppy and I don't know exactly what to exect from her for the next few weeks if we decide to wait for it to be over.
All your help & advice is appreciated!

Sounds like you litte one is growing up alright. Many vets prefer not to spay while the bitch is in season, it complicates things a bit and there tends to be much more bleeding than "normally" would occur during surgery.

Personally, I would wait out her season and have her spayed a month or so after going out. In the meantime I'd keep a close eye on her, never leave her outside even for a second unattended and make that appointment. Keep in mind this is only my opinion and this really is something that you should discuss with your own veterinarian to get all the information and then make an educated decision.

Yes. Never underestimate how ingenious male dogs can be when trying to get to a bitch in heat.

Keep her safe and away from unknown males and about a month after her heat has ended it would be safe to spay her. I wouldn't do her while in heat unless it were an emergency because there would be more blood loss and it's riskier.
