Thyroid...again
Hello, for 8 months now, Aika is on thyroid meds, initially we just checked T4s and they were low normal, so we gave o.5 mg /tyhrotabs and next she was in medium range symptoms much improved!
Now i moved and got a new Vet, she wnated a full thyroid 5 test which was ok with me. T4s again in meduim range. But T3 as well as free T3 is way below normal. First my Vet wanted to qut the Thyroid meds but a couple hours later she called and wanted to continue them. The lab had sugessted that some metabolic problem is there not just primary thyroid, but the T4 were normal ause of the meds. Now i am stuck, since I worry about the low T3s. My current Vet is ,too a bit puzzeled on what to do. So Any suggestion is welcome! Thanks

Your new vet sounds awesome. Kudos to her for doing a full panel, and to the lab for their interpretation. If your vet is puzzled, she's probably already talking with other vets or maybe discussing on an email list or yahoo group, too. There are some top thyroid researchers at Tufts in Boston. And there's Dr. Jean Dodds.

Ye I found Dr Dodds. Aikas problems were all not quite as typical and with a tip of a friend of mine we got onto the thyroid and then in between I found Dr Dodds, too. Which kinda confirmed what me and my old Vet had thought.
This was a recheck and was abit of a hassle for me to find a Vet to do a recheck without taking her completly off the meds for 4-6 weeks. The lab I think suggested this i think without knowing about the suplementation. I read arround a bit more and someone stated that with suplementation the T3s can be low in lots of dogs, not to worry as long as she is fine. But You know me I want to know all the way... In 8 weeks we will have recheck again and see what is going on then! I just like to be prepared!
