Dog's Nose Credited With Helping To Change Lives

Wavy news

Dogs warning people before they have a seizure, panic attack or migraine may sound like science fiction, but it is reality.

A Hampton woman claims her dogs can smell the chemical change in your body before one of these attacks.

Not everyone believes the theory, but for those who do believe these animals have been life changing and in some cases live saving.

Dr. Beverlee Engle was physically attacked by a stranger several years ago, and suffered a stroke years earlier. She feared if she left her house that a panic attack would take her by surprise.

She found companionship in a standard poodle, but what she didn't know is that the poodle would change her life. Dr. Engle says the dog is able to warn her of potential attacks.

"She would either nudge or touch my leg and walk me to a safe place where i could sit comfortably."

Dr. Engle says the dog's actions made sense.

"They smell a difference in chemistry. They recognize that change is not in your best interest. How they do that is beyond me."

Her daughter, Janet, agrees. Janet has two children with juvenile diabetes. She says the dogs are able to warn her before they get sick.

"It's like, 'oh my gosh something is wrong.' I'd get the diabetes kit and their blood pressure would be off. The dog knew about it for 20 minutes and while he was trying to get our attention."

Dr. Engle says the dogs are trained at her kennel and then sent to live with families who have similar disabilities.

She runs a non-profit group called the Jasmine Charitable Trust. The trust helps introduce the dogs to their new companions.

I believe in that theory they can smell out Cancer it has been said in people and they are the greatest comfort to sick and lonely people. They change peoples lives I know mine have and I had been very sick for years. When I am getting sick they know it before me and I know now to slow down.
