http://www.iditarod.com/pdffiles/media/pr2005-12-08.pdf SUSAN BUTCHER UNDERGOES TREATMENT FOR LEUKEMIA Bone Marrow Donor Being Sought Seattle – Susan Butcher, four-time champion of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race and once the most dominant athlete in her sport, has been diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), a malignant disease of the blood and bone marrow, and is undergoing chemotherapy treatment at Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center at the University of Washington, Seattle. Butcher’s husband, David Monson, said she was diagnosed late last week and began treatment December 6. Butcher’s protocol calls for several months chemotherapy. Then once the leukemia is in remission, she probably will undergo a bone marrow transplant if a suitable donor can be found. more at the link above... |

You can also send her a card, address is listed on her site, or sign her hospital web page.
http://www.susanbutcher.com/ New from today: 31-Dec-05 12:45 AM - David Monson : Today was a success for us all. The responce to the bone marrow drive was overwhelming and we are indebted to all who became regestered. Susan had a personal success as well when her bone marrow biopsy confirmed that for now the leukemia has been controlled and she will be able to be discharged. Then when given the OK by her Dr. she will be able to return to Alaska for 1 month before her next round of chemo starts. The time table for treatment has been roughly laid out January (rest and recovery) February (chemo again for 30 days) March-April (rest and wait for a match to be determined) May June July 1/2August 100 days total (marrow transplant treatment. This will be a long journey. We have just completed the first leg. Thank you for your love and support. |
