Sniffer dogs to be used on buses

Police sniffer dogs will now be making patrols on buses.
Sniffer dogs are to be used on buses in the Birmingham area to try to stop passengers using drugs.

It follows criticism that bus companies were not taking action to stop people smoking cannabis on their services.

The specially-trained dogs can detect any drug and also tell if someone has recently been in contact with drugs.

Deputy leader of Birmingham City Council, Paul Tilsley, has said that cannabis smokers were to blame for falling passenger numbers.

A dedicated drugs dog and handler will work alongside the Safer Travel team.

PC Pete Christie, from the Safer Travel team, said: "I would like to reassure bus travellers that we regularly patrol the buses both in high visibility uniforms and plain clothes with the drugs dog.

"Anyone found using or in possession of drugs will be dealt with accordingly. It is something we take very seriously."
