Dogs got domesticated only 17,000 years ago

London: A new survey of earliest known dog burials has found that humans were able domesticate dogs only as recently as between 13,000 and 17,000 years ago.

The new study by Darcy Morey suggests that the bond between humans and dogs coincides with canine burials, and refutes earlier theories that dogs became man's constant companion as early as 40,000 to 135,000 years ago.

Researchers found that though earliest known buried dog dates to around 17,000 years ago in central Russia, the practice of burying dogs did not become common between 15,000 and 14,000 years ago.

Christyann Darwent, an assistant professor of anthropology at the University of California at Davis, agrees with Morey s time window for domestication theory.

“Dogs and humans could have been hanging out together long before 17,000 years ago, but domestication means we were manipulating their breeding, and that probably didn't happen until more recently. The burials represent some of the best evidence we have for the strong social ties that exist between dogs and humans,” Discovery News quoted her, as saying.

The study is published in the latest Journal of Archaeological Science.

Well I hate to say it but I have absolutely no faith in the science of defining the age of remains.
i suppose thats because I believe in christianity which lives by the belief that man has only been on the earth for 6000 years. Makes me wonder how accurate these mens theory is.

*snorts* Date testing in science is messed up if you ask me....There really is no accurate way to test it in, and then the accurate ones are messed with by people who don't want the thing to be as young as what it really is, so they say it is older.
I don't believe in evolution, and I do believe in the Bible...I'm with Linnie on this one.

I find it strange you say this. Do you actually have any proof or are just guessing what goes on? Of course scientists have to estimate the age of fossils, but they have methods to help them reach a conclusion (such as radiometric dating).. it's not just a far fetched idea.

I believe in evolution.. it's happening right infront of our eyes.

I do! I do! I do believe in radioactive isotopes!

I'm finding the constant reference to religious beliefs in the forum, to be lacking in any scientific proof.

Yup, it sure is.

I read somewhere....some scientific thing (LOL) that the evidence was conflicting. There was archeological eveidence and molecular evidence and the two weren't quite agreeing with eachother. I have no clue where that was I was reading this. But....it doesn't really matter, I guess. As long as we hold onto those radio active isotapes. We can always figure this out later.

Oh, I do believe that the testing works, I just don't really know how accurate it is. I mean, some people think that the testing is by how far down it is in the soil, but yet lots of things could be buried in a natural distaster like a mudslide or something like that. *shurgs* I guess it depends on the way they are testing it.

I don't want to start anything "religous", but I do have to add that I DON"T think that evolution is happening "right in front of our eyes". I dont' think it ever happend. Way to much chance, not enough proof.
It is called the Theory of Evolution. It isn't even a scientific law (not enough proof) and yet we are basing a lot of stuff on just a mere theory. Just IMO though.

Ok guys lets please try to keep religion out of the debate. It seems that when religion gets brought into a debate it becomes very personal very fast so....lets leave it out.

I don't get that, because that would mean that only the people that don't believe in any one religion, any God (Atheists), could post their opinions?

Oh, I'm up for any ol' debate whether it involves atheists, agnostics, Christians, Muslims, Bhuddists(sp?), Hinduists(sp?), Mormens, whatever. lol I love debates. I think that as long as people don't get nasty, dont' bash other people for what they believe in, and view all sides equally that I "religous" debate can be very fun indeed.

(But I do realize that not everybody is like that and some debates can turn very nasty very quick.)

The way they figure out how far back something goes is by erossion. They can tell by how many layers of soil.

You have to have an open mind about how far man goes back. To be honest, I dont' know if I believe one way or another(Religious belief or Evolution). There is just to many points that prove both wrong. Some things in this world will most likely always remain a mystery.

I only have a problem with folks who slip their religious beliefs into discussions where others might consider it offensive.

I guess since noone is respecting the moderator's request, OR the feelings of others, I'll activate that old thread and you all can knock yourselves out.
