By Jehovah G, Coimbatore : People in Comibatore have become too scared of dogs these days as the number of deaths caused by dog bites are increasing rapidly.
To control the growing stray dog menace, the Municipal Corporation of Coimbatore has launched a first-ever birth-control drive to protect everyone from stray dogs.
The initiative has been launched in cooperation with the People for Animals.
“Due to proliferation in the dog population, dog bite cases are also increasing. It is estimated that 1,000 cases are being recorded everyday around the country. Owing to the increase in dog bite deaths, the government has been asked to start this birth control surgery on dogs on directions of the Animal Welfare Board of India,” says Dr.Thirukumaran, Veterinary Director, Coimbatore Corporation.
The unique initiative has received a tremendous support from the residents here. On an average 50 dogs are being operated upon per day and post-surgery care is also being taken for 7-8 days in post operative shelters. After the post operative phase, full care is taken and the dogs are left at the same place where they were picked up from.
There has been an alarming increase in the population of stray dogs and dog bite cases since the killing of stray dogs has been banned by the Animal Welfare Board. All this has now compelled the Tamil Nadu Government to begin this unique project of dog birth-control.
The total population of stray dogs in the country is estimated to be about 10 million and feared to touch 50 million figure within few years. It is also estimated that almost 1000 puppies are being delivered everyday.
Over a thousand persons are bit by stray dogs in the country.
The project has been welcomed by various animal welfare organisations and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
