Owners register dangerous dogs

By Rocky Mountain News
February 3, 2006

Aurora's ban on dangerous dogs has gone into effect with owners registering 485 family pets, most of which were pit bulls, officials said Thursday.

"We know that the people who took time to obtain the licenses are owners who take their dogs to obedience training and keep them in control," said Cheryl Conway of Aurora's Animal Care Division.

The Aurora City Council originally banned dangerous dogs, but created the registration system to grandfather in dogs whose owners were willing to pay $200 for a license and provide secure pens for the animals. Conway said there's no way to know how many other pit bulls and other dangerous dogs remain in Aurora.

The dangerous dog ban includes 10 breeds, but most of the animals registered were pit bulls, she said. The day before the ban went into effect on Wednesday, animal care officers registered 171 dogs, but there were no problems with the animals or their owners.

"We had 10 to 15 in the lobby at any one time, but the dogs were very well behaved and their owners had them in control," said Conway.

And as usual it is the responsible pet owners who will abide by the new ruling and the feral ones that have the untrained vicious dogs will just ignore it.
